Zipp site sight say’s a 1080 is better paired with a tangiente. I wonder why though

Basically the same tire, and more marketing for Zipp… no shock there.
I run the 21 (Evo CX 2) with the 404, not sure if the 1080 is different
I run a 21 Evo CX 2 on a C2 HED Stinger. Seems to fit well but is there any concern about the trend towards thinner tires and wider rims? In terms of a tire rolling off.

I had no issues on my Stinger 9 with a 21mm , I had at least one descent at 45mph and had no shudder, or scare of rolling. Just my .02 (Does look goofy on a HED though ![]()
I found the information I was looking for in the Zipp site:
Tire choice depends highly on user preference and conditions. To summarize, a 21mm has superior aerodynamics with our rims; a 23mm is larger and subsequently has better ride quality and rim protection, but at a slight aero penalty. Here are some questions you can ask that will help guide your decision: * ** * * Triathlon/Time trial? In general – 21mm.* Road racing? In general – 23mm. *Training and/or daily riding? 23mm+ * Dry? 21mm at normal recommended pressure. *Wet? 23mm at a slightly lower pressure. * Smooth roads? 21mm at normal recommended pressure. *Rough roads? 23mm at a slightly lower pressure. * User prefers slight aero benefit of 21’s at the expense of a little ride comfort, rim protection, and rolling resistance? Use 21mm. *User prefers slightly better ride comfort, rim protection, and rolling resistance of 23’s at the expense of a little aero? Use 23mm. * Rider weighs less? 21mm. *Rider weighs more? 23mm. *

had the same question on tires for the HED Stingers this week as I am replacing tires so I called HED and they recommended going with 23’s for the Stinger 9 & 6.
Official answer from Zipp - 21mm.

Yes, HEDs are optimized for 23mm. The Stinger 9 is marginally faster than the 808 with a 23mm on both, the 808 is marginally faster than the 9 with a 21mm on both. So the universal answer is 21 for Zipp // 23 for HED. It is - however - a VERY small difference in each case.
Ok. It is clear now.
But I now have another doubt. You mention that the S9 in some conditions is marginally faster than the 808 but, is that wheel also faster than the 1080 in some conditions?

I am sure it would depend on who you ask, but the answer from Zipp - and the same answer that you’ll get from me - is absolutely not. The 1080 is significantly faster in all conditions than a 808. The 1080 is also more “forgiving” of tire width than the 808 - it slows down less with a 23mm tire on it.
I was looking at the HED site today for warranty information on the Stinger 9. Never noticed it before but HED indicates that warranty on the Stinger 9 will be voided if you use anything thinner than a 23mm tire.
Not sure how they would know but thought this was interesting.
Also, I am pretty sure that HED indicated somewhere that the aero numbers on their site for the Stinger 9 were with a 21mm Vitoria CX II.

Having looked at the way a 21 mm seats on the S9 I think it is reasonable for HED to indicate that the warranty would be voided if using a 21 mm. Doing the WT testing on the H S wheels with a 21 mm does not sound reasonable. Where did you see those results?
