Part of my vision ‘fix’ being able to wear contacts is not having wind blow on my eyes. Dry eye is a bitch! Now when I wear sunglasses inevitably some wind gets in there so that is out. I’d really like to go for a visor that is built in and not after the fact as my pal has had tons of issue with an ‘add on’ visor that you take in and out. Are they all like that or do some makes come with a visor permanently fixed?
I despise contacts, but it’s only for tt days. It’s kept me off a tt bike for about 2 years so I gotta do what I gotta do!
Have never owned a tt helmet, but do know Rudy’s don’t fit my back worth a poo after a brief trial.
I have the original Louis Garneau Rocket (which is still one of the best aero helmets out there … not the Rocket Air or any of the other iterations, but the original “4-slit” Rocket). I cut the visor designed to bolt on to the outside of the helmet so that it was about an inch larger than the brow opening all the way around, then I took an exacto knife and carefully ran it between the foam and the outer shell along the brow opening. Then I slid the visor I’d cut into the space between the styrofoam and the outer shell. Perfection! Enough friction to stay in place, but also easy to remove, clean, adjust, etc. And I’ve won many races with it from 10 mile TTs to 112 Iron-distance relay legs. Very nice setup.
you really have to try them since our heads and back shapes are all different, but I’ll second the LG helmets. Nice and simple, stay put reasonably well, fit well on good low positions usually. Not bulbous or huge, vents can be taped over if you don’t want them.
The Giro Selector is the new hotness, but I have some gripes with it. The clips that hold the visor on intrude on your vision. Its delicate, the replaceable side-plates are always popping off. The adjustment mechanism is labor intensive rather than a simple turn of a knob. annnnd, its time consuming to put on, a total deal breaker for triathlon.
all that might be worth it if it is a few seconds faster for a TT specialist though.
I second a lot of what Jack has said here. I have the Selector, and what bothers me most is that in transition during the rush to get the helmet on, when pulling the “ear-covers” out, the visor itself almost always comes undone from where it slides into the helmet. While this is only a minor annoyance, it still shouldn’t happen. The other big negative in my opinion is that it is absolutely a hot-box in there. The adjustable nob on the back doesn’t bother me much, because once you have it dialed in, you don’t really need to mess with it.
All of that said, I wouldn’t use anything else, because for my head-shape and position on the bike, this is by-far the most aero helmet. While others ride up on my forehead (front-side) and have a large gap to my back (back-side), the Selector stays down on my head in the front and has almost no gap in the back. I guess this brings me to my summary advice, which is really pretty simple: Evaluate the costs and benefits, and make a desicion. For me, having something far more aero (for my head shape) is worth the annoyance of the visor coming undone and the heat (especially because I find most aero helmets to be hot, why they made this one in black completely befuddles me, though).
Bell Javelin has worked really well for me this season, no issues with the visor popping out or the fitting issues on the fly mentioned for other models.
I have nothing further to add to this thread. Just wanted to say that I love your screen name.
Oh, I do have one more thing to say. Why is it that, in thread after thread, I say something, then Jackmott says the exact same thing, then others chime in about how they agree with Jackmott? That’s happened several times just in the last 24 hours. I guess I’m just not one of the cool kids. At least I’m one of the faster ones.
It looks like the Bell Javelin is the triathlon friendly version of the Giro Selector. Ignoring the vents and open tail section, the shape looks very similar to the Selector (with the smaller faring) but not exactly the same.
I just bought one and hoping it is as fast as the Selector with the vents and the open tail covered up - plus it’s always great to have the ventillation option for hotter races.
No love for the LG Vorttice? I use mine with the visor and when the wind was whipping at INSG I felt very insulated from all the buffeting. I think LG got the design right on this helmet as more and more manufacturers are coming out with similar designs like the new Specialized S-Works.

Thanks all
Used the Vorttice for the last year. I just got the Kask K.31 and wow what a difference. The Kask is the most comfortable helmet I have ever worn. It looks good too.
I am holding out for the Kask TT helmet Sky is wearing. I work at a bike shop and got to see one first hand and they are very sleek. The magnetic visor holds great and doesn’t have the super long tail most do which I like. Unfortunately we were told they won’t be available until after the Olympics.

That was Sky/British cyclings deal I believe. There is a UK company that is taking deposits of £150 so it is not going to be cheap!
