so what triathlon shoes are you guys (and girls) wearing and what do you like about them.
I have the Shimano TR-31, their basic tri shoe. I like that it has a big velcro strap that opens very wide and has a notch that keeps it open until I yank it closed, which makes it easy for my oxygen-deprived brain to fumble it onto my feet in T1 (I’m too much of a klutz to attempt a flying mount during a race, but I’m sure that the strap would be beneficial then too). I also like that it has vent holes for water to escape from, and by the time I finish a 40k bike leg, my feet are perfectly dry. I have another pair of road shoes - Specialized S-Works - which are much lighter and more comfortable, so I use them on all of my training rides, but I’ve never noticed any sort of discomfort during a triathlon leg.
I don’t do long course (yet) so comfort is really not an issue. I could use a piece of wood for a saddle and I probably wouldn’t even notice the difference in an Olympic due to all the adrenaline.
I am using the Sidi T2. I like the sole, nice and stiff, though not quite as stiff as my road shoe. I don’t really like the upper, especially the heel area; it just doesn’t seem to support the foot as well as my Specialized Pro road shoe. It feels like I am not able to put as much power through them but I don’t have a power meter so I may be mistaken.
Get what Lance wears… or Newtons.
Is it worth it to take the extra 45 seconds and put on an ergo (Sidi) as opposed to a triathlon specific cycling shoe?

I suppose that is up to you. Also remember that taking the shoe off is an issue too. It is easy to remove a tri shoe while leaving it clipped to the pedal, but doing this with a road shoe will be difficult and time consuming. There is also the issue of the lining. The tri shoes are designed to be worn sockless, road shoes are not. If it is a longer race and you plan on wearing socks for comfort then perhaps it would also be worth your while to wear road shoes but for shorter races in which you are not wearing socks, tri shoes would probably be better. Another issue is fit. With tri shoes, you might wish to size down half a size because you are going sockless. Going sockless with road shoes might mean they will not fit quite as well as usual. I wore my road shoes for my first sprint tri but because of the lining I also wore socks. Took me ages in transition.
So Far we Have:
Sidi T2 - stiff but not as stiff as road shoe, heel area may keep from putting in maximum power
Shimano TR-31 - basic, one strap and notch to keep strap open till yanked, vent holes for water
Specialized S-Works - Road Shoe but lighter and more comfortable
and what does Lance wear? The Nike Site has nothing about cycling…
I guess a thread like this will tell you if you are more of a runner or a cyclist. I was getting ready to talk about my Saucony racing flats. Oh well…Shimano TR51
Just plain funny. The sh*t that Triathletes say…
… do think the Shimano TR-31 is more aero then the TR-54?
My coach says so…
is the T3 or the Mavic Helium worth the $300+ price when Pearl Izumi and Shimano are making their top-end shoes under $200? I also like the Bontrager RXL Hilo and its sub 250 gram weight.
anyone know what Lance Armstrong wears for cycling shoes ?
Nike I think. May have updated to Bontragers but has been Nike for a while. Even if they’re not actually made-by-Nike or available in shops.
Custom Rocket 7’s.
SQW, i think, wears the s-works road shoe with the double boa system. i don’t think it takes him 45sec to get these on and off.
I have the sworks with the 2 micro adjust boa, but I use my specialized expert all the time which has only one boa with a quick release.
Apparently the expert aren’t as stiff as the sworks but for triathlon where you are not pushing 1000+ watts in a sprint, I’m not sure it matters. The expert are considerably cheaper.
I’ve had Garneau, Sidi and shimano shoes. Comfort wise, specialized wins (for me)
are the specialized as wide as the shimanos? I have TR-51s which I love, but I’ve been using them for the past 3 years so I’m due for a replacement. Been looking at the specialized but not tried them on yet. I’ve got wide feet and the Shimanos were the best fit at the time.
If you could pick anything which would you go with?
Check out these and let me know what you think?

I just moved from Shimano TR-31 to Specialized Trivent and it’s a huge difference. Carbon sole is super stiff, the extra strap across the toe box is great for additional adjustment. Getting in/out is easy with a large loop on the heel, and the loop is tacky to the touch so it’s easy to get a good grip on it. It also has a contoured insole so it almost feels like it has an orthotic in place (I wear Rx orthotics in my run shoes due to plantar fasciitis.) I got them them new locally for about $180 w/ tax.
