Best Tri Bike Shoes?

Looking for recommendations to replace my old Sidi T2s.

They’ve served me well (super comfortable without socks) but have a couple of annoying problems.

One is that, when leaving T1 - i.e pedaling with foot on top of the shoe - the heel gets trampled down. That leads to wasted time and frustration as I have to “unbend” the heel to get my foot in.

The second is the Velcro fastener. When pedaling away, it’s very hard to tighten up the shoes sufficiently.

Bottom line, the T2s are fine if you’re one of those who puts their shoes on in T1 then tap dances to the mount line. But if you want to do flying mounts, they’re useless.

Thanks.

I’ve tried using other shoes and I keep going back to the Sidi T series. Currently on the T3 Carbon.

I really want to try the S-works trivents because they look like they’d solve that heel trampling issue nicely. Never ridden in them because they’re crazy expensive, but I really like the concept

It is definitely a little bit of give and take with shoes. If you want shoes that are fast aerodynamically then it is simple shoes that are shaped like a boat with no dials, straps etc. For me that was the Giro Empire SLX with elastic laces instead of the stock laces. YMMV, but they work for me and seem to work out for a few others, non-sponsored pros included. The heal still tends to get stuck but just reach down and grab your heal and pull up. You don’t need to adjust tension and you can take them off without even reaching down.

I’m curious because I’m looking for shoes without a big velcro strap sticking out. These are shoes without the loop at the heel right? How do you attach this to the back in T1? and isn’t it impossible to slide into them when running out T1 and hop onto the bike?

You can add a heal loop that is what my old roommate did if that helps. I just have a drilled hole in the back and feed the rubber band through. In general the fastest way to do shoes is to hop on your bike, pedal up to speed and the reach down and put the feet in while at speed. If you want to slip in them right away you can do it and get the toes in but you will still have to mostly likely reach down to get the heal tab to come over your heal. But the aero benefit + not having to adjust a strap dial + not having to adjust a strap dial to take back off is well worth the extra hassle of getting the foot IME.

That’s the part which I find difficult… even with a heal loop I’ve struggled multiple times. Still worth considering though.

It just something you have to practice. A lot of times before races I’ll find a parking lot and practice turns and getting my shoes on and off as the workout for the day.

I am also looking into the Giro Empire SLX shoe mod. I am wondering what is your preference for the laces on these shoes?

thanks

This is what I have and I love. Very nice and well designed shoes. Very, for me, comfortable. I am on my 2nd pair and when these are trashed I’ll probably go for #3.
