I am looking for some good training ride routes around Boston but using the search function brings up mostly marathon info. Does anyone have a favorite route they ride their tri bike on? Doesn’t matter how long or hilly they are, just something that relatively safe while on the aero bars.
I live in Arlington and typically head out towards Concord and do loops around Great Brook Farm and the CBTT. There are also some pretty nice roads heading towards Chelmsford and out to Harvard. Happy to share some of my strava activities with you to give ideas, or feel free to join for a ride.
There are raiders in Concord.
Not sure what you mean…
I live in Bedford. Tons of great rides out in this area out towards Concord, Carlisle, Stow, Westford, Harvard, Littleton, etc. lots of pretty good roads with not much traffic. Search for the ‘Apple pie’ ride - the road arrow is the math ‘pi’ symbol.
Some other resources:
MIT Cycling Routes: http://cycling.mit.edu/routes/
Harvard Cycling Routes: http://huca.herokuapp.com/routes/
Charles River Wheelmen: http://crw.org/rides/monthcalendar.php?mode=thismonth
The Charles River Wheelmen often have arrowed routes. If you check the calendar and find a ride that was held in the last couple weeks the arrows will likely still be on the road. They leave from various places. They also have their spring century next weekend.
Go on ride with gps then search RSC (a shop in Lexington). A ton of rides will come up. Harvard is kind of the standard loop…there’s a general store out there to fuel up before coming back and a bunch of different ways to get there. I could send you some routes if you’d like.
Going even further out, Nashua river rail trail (Ayer to Nashua, NH) is usually pretty empty.
East Bay bike path in Providence. Never ridden it.
Blackstone River path (Woonsocket to Cumberland) is hit or miss.
Even further out, there are some nice roads between Worcester and Fitchburg - just don’t ride in Clinton or Worcester (drivers in Worcester and awful roads in Clinton)
Not sure where you are located but here are some options north of the city: http://www.nscyc.org/routes-database
I grew up out in Bedford and still ride quite a bit out that way, will echo what Nate said about the riding out in that area (as well as the Apple Pi loop).
Lots of good stuff on the CRW link as well, enjoy!
That would be great, I would love to see your Strava routes and meet up for a ride once we get a decent day of weather.
Thanks!
I would like that a lot, thanks!
West of Boston you’ll find a lot of good routes (well marked) through Needham, Dover, Sherborn, Medfield, Millis, etc. Many of these routes were originally setup and marked by the Charles River Wheelmen and they still remark many of them as needed. You can find pretty detailed cue sheets on their website.
Hi guys,

These are some great routes, usually with low traffic and varying terrain.
A lot of nice rides out west of your way…For a change of pace you could always head up the north shore and cape anne area along the coast. Nice riding there as well.
Some good rides on here as well:
Thank you all for the great answers. If anyone wants to meet and talk about triathlon too, PM me.
