My experience is the price is the price. Will vary some from bigger company to smaller, but not for time of year. What will vary is the lead time. As fall comes, people start to think about planned service, like having their furnace cleaned. Once it’s cold enough to turn the heat on, the unexpected failure to light issues arise and the calls come in for unplanned service. Same with AC in spring and the first hot days. Lead time is likely to be the best now, when most AC failures have already been dealt with and people aren’t thinking about their furnaces yet.
Last few weeks of heat. Pish posh. I’ll be running my AC for another 2-3 months.
Now. I wouldn’t wait until the ground is frozen in case you need a new or different pad. Otherwise now is the time you’ll get the quickest turn around. The price probably won’t be any less though.
Did it totally die or just not making much cold air. If not total die hose out air fins and check filter and replace it needed. Worth a try. IF it works you are a hero. Best time for repair is now or maybe early Sept what with guys taking vacations and such. I’d call now. You don’t want your wife to get too hot.

It started making a horrible buzzing sound. So I turned it off. Then I tried turning it back on. All we get is the fan circulating air through the house via ducts. No AC. AC unit doesn’t start.
Ours crapped out the day before we had the inspection on our home when we were selling. $6,000 because it didn’t have the courtesy to wait for a few weeks after closing.
It might be a small part for 200 or so. get it checked out and make sure that same person can do an install for you fairly cheap a lot of companies are running interest-free financing for up to 48 months check it out

Might check out this video. It’s long but you could jump to about 18 mins in. I would check your contractor first (press in with a screwdriver) to see if the compressor or fan kicks on. Then check the capacitor. Those are two easy things to trouble shoot before you call the HVAC guys.
Sounds like a fan motor but could be a capacitor. Should be able to get it repaired.
Best time for a new system is early spring, March/April. Usually the slowest time of the year and you will beat the late spring, early summer rush.

The equip costs probably won’t change. The labor cost might if they are in slack time and bids are more competitive. Usually these guys do furnace/heat work also in winter…
If you decide to roll the dice and see if you can get a lower price in the fall/winter, go ahead and test your theory.
Get some bids now, then get more bids in fall and see if prices dropped…

Ours did the same thing earlier this summer. The compressor unit would buzz but nothing else. Luckily we upgraded our furnace maintenance plan earlier this year to add AC for free for 1 year, so no cost for the repair. It was a blown relay switch I believe and was a quick fix. Would have been $200 or so if we didn’t have the plan.
