I’ve recently picked up a lot of extra work on my evenings and weekends so I’m having to condense my workouts for the next month or so. My plan includes an hour or so spin or run at the gym right after my masters swim. The problem is the gym is typically very busy around the time I would be going and I would love to not be “that guy” showing up and stinking like chlorine while I work out. In my opinion its just as obnoxious as the people who wear heavy cologne or perfume, or have really bad BO.
What is the best soap/shampoo for getting rid of that smell? I find a normal shower with soap doesn’t get rid of it. I wont notice it the next morning but when I shower after work the day after I swim, I notice it as soon as I’m in the shower (ex. swim 6pm monday, shower, go to work tuesday, shower tuesday at 5 pm and smell chlorine ).
What do you guys/gals use? Is it just one of those things that maybe I just notice because I’m conscious of the smell but others wouldn’t?
I just use whatever I have to hand. It’s not a great solution. I’ve been getting dry skin recently so I scoured the reviews on Amazon for about 3 minutes and ordered some Summer Solutions “Swimmer’s Own” gel. If it’s any good, and I remember, I’ll report back…
Best shampoo I have found is called “Ultra Swim”. Can get it at most rite aids, cvs, etc…
Gets the chlorine out of your hair pretty good and the smell as well
Triswim shampoo works great but their conditioner isn’t worth $10. My barber told me that the cheap $.99 shit actual contains animal fats which helps the best against chlorine. I’ve tried their bodywash and other one but the smell still remains. I think it’s just part of being a triathlete. Learn to enjoy it.

I use TriSwim when I don’t want to smell like chlorine. Sometimes, I just embrace the smell. Other people will just think something smells vaguely like a swimming pool…
i HIGHLY recommend www.sbrsportsinc.com and all of their products*. they have TriSwim; Shampoo, Conditioner, Body wash, and Lotion ALL with chlorine smell removing capabilities. AND you can get the stuff in HUGE 64oz “Jugs” with a pump… who doesn’t love huge jugs and a pump
*i admit to just picking them up as a sponsor this year. But i want to inform you that the stuff REALLY does work! i had never tried it before this year, but i’m glad i did.
on a side note, if you haven’t used TriSlide, you NEED to! anti chafe lubricant in a spray bottle? freaking brilliant idea! to top it off, it actually works, just ask my “running in the freezing cold, rain soaked, shorts wearing winter sized legs” that are proned to chafeing with all the other ‘deoderant stick’ type glides.
sorry if that sounded like a sales pitch, but i tend to do that for product i ACTUALLY LIKE and USE.
i haven’t any special soap, but in an effort to extend the lifetime of swimsuits, i’ve tried a variety of things. my most successful is simply keeping my suit on the whole time i’m showering and it has washed out the chlorine from my suit and off my skin.
peggy
One of the things I’ve found that really helps keep the smell down is doing a through rinse before getting in the pool. I’ve read that doing this keeps your hair from absorbing as much water/chlorine from the pool. Whatever the reason, the difference is very noticeable.
I’ll second the TriSwim. The smell of chlorine doesn’t bother me, but the itchy skin does, and the Triswim works great. Haven’t tried the shampoo or conditioner yet, as I don’t seem to have a hair-related pool problem.
And I’d WAY rather smell like a pool than like nasty perfume applied with a heavy hand. Yeah, lady on the treadmill in full makeup, stinking up the joint… I’m looking at you.
Well I have to disagree. While I don’t love the smell of Chlorene, I don’t find it too bad. BO and perfume are cloying and stink. But that may just be my opinion. Yup, I can smell the Chlorene when I have a shower after swimming, even if it has been 3 or 4 days since I swam. Seems to take close to a week to remove all traces. But, I don’t notice it that much (if at all) when I am running (on the treadmill) or biking on the trainer.
