I recently had surgery on my lower back for a BAD bulging disc (L5 S1). Running doesn’t seem to cause me any issues but i was wondering whether i should move to a more cushioning type running shoe??
I’m of average weight and have a reasonably neutral running style although i’ve tendered to run in a shoe with a little bit of stability. Typically i have raced and trained in Asics DS Trainers.
Can anyone provide a recommendation?
I vote you buy the shoes that get you to do the most core work.
I’ve had bulging l4-l5, l5-s1 for going on 15 years now. Walking kills my
back far more than running.
I worry more about my knees (ITB) than my back.
YMMV. N=1.

I don’t think you need shoes for yoga class
.
yeah yeah - i’ve got it, get a strong core!!! Believe me I’m working on it, but at the same time iIm also running and if there is one shoe (or more likely - one type of shoe) that is or could be better (ie maybe more cushioning) then i would prefer to use that shoe.
In the meantime, i’ll be holding the plank pose!!!
I think I’ve already posted my qualifications (as a person who is slow, a bad back
and a bad core).
I run in Asics because they work for my knees.
Change your shoes a little more often (I rarely make 250 miles).
Good luck.
