I’m driving cross country next week for my race and will be transporting my bike in a crossover/suv. I’d like to keep the bike propped up with the front wheel off to maximize storage but haven’t done this before.
Any suggestions on how to do this?

Friend and I were just discussing this on the way to lunch actually, well just transporting bikes inside wagons/suvs.
I personally would get one of those for mounts they make, like for putting a bike in a truck bed

Then you can figure out a way to attach it. Depending on the vehicle you could attach it to a 2x4 that is slightly oversized and wedge it between the wheel wells. Another thought was if the car has rear headrests and there is enough room you could attach it the posts for the rear seats when folded down, in theory that could be semi permanent. Some cars with the center belt in the fold down seat portion re reinforced well and you could screw it into that, would depend on how much you care about the interior.
This product is exactly the best bet I’ve found in researching before I posted my question. Screwing it to a 2x4 is a smart idea. Then I would only need to secure the bike from the side.
On our way the USA Pro Challenge in CO from AR. We have four bikes packed in this Suburu:
All have front wheels removed and seatposts removed. The key is to use a fork mount, usually attached to a 2x4, to mount the fork to.
Leaves loads of space for all your gear. And the bike is super stable and safe. The fork mount is less than $20 at any LBS, or online.
Hope this helps!
Why not just get a bike rack or hitch rack?
Money. Personal preference having my bike inside. Etc.

I have a chrysler pacifica and can fit 4 bikes in the back doing that. That’ll be your best option.
+1 on the 2x4. I know a pro with a Honda Fit hat transports 2 bikes this way.
I need to do the same, but for now with my wife and 5 year old, it’s easier to just put my bike on the roof to make room for luggage.
