Best set of 700cc Wheels Under $300

Looking to get some 700c and have a budget of $420. I currently ride a nine speed Tiagra, 105 component mix on a Specialilzed Allez Sport A1 Max. Would also like to find out what the best online resources are for finding bicycle stores that have great catalogs and for a list of the best biyclce part stores on the web. Don’t have much time to visit my local bike shop due to my many hours on the bike and in the classroom.

click on this link and go through the lot of them. I find supergo and performancebike to have some pretty good, in house, products. The in house stuff doesn’t have the big name attached to it but I think the products are very comparable.

Ultegra hubs, Mavic CXP33 rims, and double butted 14/15 spokes will run you $270 That leaves plenty left over for a cassette, tires, tubes and rim tape.

suppose I do buy those wheels what kind of tires would you recommend for a 100mile rider per week including half of those miles on the trainer. I am doing some 25-50 bicycle races but mostly some olympic triathlons.

for an all around training / racing tire, my favorite has been the Michelin Carbon.

jasonk’s recommendation is as good or better than any. I also like the Mavic Cosmos and have had a lot of success riding and selling them. I particularly like the hub.

For under 300 bucks you can’t beat a Velocity Spartacus Pro wheelset. I use them for training wheels, but with a 30 mm rim depth you could race on them (if you’re not a weight weenie, they are heavy-ish). I’ve got almost 2000 miles on mine and they haven’t needed to be trued, made any odd sounds etc etc.

BTW, it was a gorgeous day for a 50-miler in Brooklyn today–almost magical, I was darn right giddy riding my bike a few times. Spring is a coming!

I agree with Tripoet. Even better yet for the money, Velocity Spartacus. Also a 30mm rim depth but without the bladed spokes. Solid, cool looking, aero looking, strong and right now they are on sale from www.spinlitecycling.com for around $160/pair. Leaves you plenty of left-over cash for a cassette, tubes, and tires. I like the Continental gator skin tires for training and the Michelin Pro Race for racing.
