I researched the best running shoes for women for my partner, as she has been wanting to get back into running and avoid the knee pain she used to have. i have been experiencing worry seeing her struggle with discomfort after short runs, and I want her to have something that really supports her. i went through reviews from trusted sources like Runner’s World, Road Trail Run, and Amazon customer feedback and after comparing many options these two kept coming up as the top choices:
however, i am having trouble deciding which one would be better for her and i would love to get your expert advice and hoping maybe some experienced runners or coaches on this forum can also share their advice.
she usually runs 3–5 miles a few times a week on both pavement and trails, and I want something that’s supportive, comfortable, and durable. any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
There is no “top shoe for women” because - and this may come as a shock - women are whole-ass people with as much diversity of needs, desires, morphology, and mechanics as men.
Take your wife to a running store and have her try on a bunch of shoes. Buy the ones that fit her feet and support her in a way that is comfortable.
Knee pain from 3-5 mile runs a few times a week doesn’t sound like a shoe problem.
My knees start to swell up after I have logged about 600+ miles on a pair of shoes and all the foam is compressed. That is a shoe problem. In addition to worn out shoes if you have flat feet or high arches and don’t have the right shoes for you feet then that would be a shoe problem. There also can be more subtle fit issues where one brand or model may fit your feet better than another shoe on may provide better support or protection than another but knee pain for sort light runs would probably no occur for subtle fit issues (but I could be wrong). If the fit is good, then there may be other things causing knee pain.
Weak hips, weak glutes, weak quads, or weak hip abductors can lead to poor tracking which is when the kneecap isn’t moving straight up and down, but slightly to the side. That will cause knee pain but a shoes won’t correct the issue.
Tight IT bands (tendon that goes from the hip to the knee cap on the outside of the leg) can cause sideways tension on the knee. That also can cause knee pain and also isn’t something that a shoe can correct.
Overstriding or poor mechanics can increase the impact force on the knee. Again that can cause knee pain but is not something a shoes can correct.
There are a lot of simple DIY tests to determine if you have strength, form, or other issues that could cause knee pain. You might want to back up your shoe research with some research on the DIY tests and run through them too. It might save you from buying shoe that won’t do what you want them to.
I’d go with the Brooks Glycerin for your partner. From my experience and reading Amazon reviews, many runners with knee pain find them super comfy and supportive for regular runs. I also checked feedback on VYDT, and people mentioned they hold up well over time and feel soft on both pavement and trails. The Nike pair is good too, but Brooks usually gives a bit more cushioning, which might help her stay pain free.
