Best road bike for under $1000?

My friend wants to know what the best road bike is for under a $1000. He is looking at a Trek 1500 for a little under $1000. I have a trek too but when I bought is I was on the bandwagon and the brand was readily available.

Check the March issue of Bicycling.
I remember seing a small blurb in there with a couple suggestions (The Trek was in there, so was a Specialized and two others).
