Best Places in Ohio for Triathlons

Future, Past and Present.
I have been involved with Triathlons for over a decade and have seen or considered area’s where triathlons are ideal in Ohio.

Best Places

  1. Salt Fork State Park, Scenic and Beautiful
  2. Wayne National Forest - Dow Lake
  3. Atwood Lake- RIP ( Actually has a Bike Lane)
  4. Wayne National Forest - Burr Oak
  5. Wayne National Forest - Lake Hope
  6. Pleasant Hill Damn-RIP Pineman- Part of Mohican State Forest.
  7. Shawnee State Forest -. Triple T Favorite Location
  8. Hocking Hills area

The reason? Are you a race director/promoter?

the area around mohican state park used to have pineman.

Ahhhh…the fog fest. That was one of the great Triathlon experiences of my life. Nothing like being lost in fog as thick as pea soup out in the middle of a lake with 250 of your closest friends.

It really was epic.
.

Just curious, did you ever do the Portage Lakes tri/du?

I ride those roads on a daily basis, pretty nice area.

That was a fun race, probably be there this year.

I was thinking of doing the saturday race too.

Nice list. I would love for HFP Racing to bring their series back to Pleasant Hill and Shawnee. The series race put on by HFP in Vermilion is also quite scenic.

Fog fest and Lemming fest! I remember being out on the lake - swimmers, kayakers/canoeists all being lost in the fog not knowing which direction swim START/FINISH was, then one person would say, “Its this way!” and everyone would swim a couple of hundred yards that direction. Then another swimmer would say, “No. Its this way!” and everyone would follow that person in a new direction. I just rolled on my back and started howling with laughter! I decided to just swim a straight line in one direction to see where I ended up (the lake wasn’t that big), and ended up about 100-200yds left of the swim exit! I was fortunate to get out of the water and into dry clothes sooner than many of the athletes that morning. Other than hyperthermia to some folks, everyone made it out safe and was accounted for!

Had the fog not canceled the swim and bike/run restart delayed the race cutting the bike segment to 56 miles, it would have been the hardest, most epic Iron-distance event I’ve done by far! Shannon sure loves those hills! Good stuff!

Yes!
I have finished at least six years of tri’s there, there’s getting to be a traffic issue there.
The area’s i’ve mentioned are practically free of cars and traffic.

That was my first Triathlon at Pleasant Hill Lake in 1998, actually it was sprint distant Tri at the time…
and to this day, I still consider that sight the best place for a sprint tri in ohio.

My Brother!

I’ve done quite a few races in Ohio, and other than the water quality sometimes (I live on a crystal clear mountain lake so I’m a bit picky) I completely dig the Maumee Bay race. Flat and fast, little traffic, relatively uncrowded, and an ideal run to PR on.

Before I moved to FL I remember Cincy having the Tri 101 or something - where you were supposed to swim in the Ohio river. Shockingly - the swim was cancelled.

In college my friend had a ski boat and lived about 4 miles from the Ohio River. Used to go tubing and skiing all the time. Of course we had to have someone in the front of the boat to point out to the driver and person being towed where the partially submerged logs were. Funniest time was when I was on a training ride in KY and was taking a ferry back across - saw my friends, waved them down, threw my bike on the boat and went tubing.

Also, seem to remember seeing on “Daily News of Open Water Swimming” some race results last year from an open water swim in the Ohio. Ironically, the boat owner’s son (from the above story) won his AG.

Maumee Bay is great swim, and one of the most *picturesque runs in the World of Tri’s. I’ll be sure not to miss it again this year. *
