Best Place to Mount Minipump

I have a minpump which has a bracket that mounts via water bottle holder bolts. So my choices are either on down tube left or right in front of the water bottle or left or right on the seat tube behind water bottle. As you can tell I know nothing about aerodynamics but I am thinking of putting it behind the seat tube water bottle on the drive side directly above FD. Any thoughts? If it makes any difference this is a standard road bike.

It’s pretty unaero either way. Down tube should be better than seat tube, but jersey pocket is best. For races, get a minipump that fits in your flat kit, or a CO2 inflator.

Pumps are so fred, bro. CO2 or bust.

Until you manage to screw up and blow through all your CO2, or get more flats than you have cartridges.

I have one of these on my gravel bike, on the downtube (non-drive side). One or two CO2’s in a saddle pack or jersey pocket.
Throw it in a jersey pocket for road rides, with a CO2 or two.

If you are training solo, a pump will get you home even when everything goes pear shaped.

This person is a pro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtslGL9Qat8&t=120
.

And that pro wasn’t carrying a pump because her name isn’t Fred Wellington.

No, she was just on the side of the road pleading for one.

It’s just an example of how having one CO2 can let you down. If you are training in a group, or in a race there are lots of other people to lend you a spare. 40 miles into a solo ride is another story.

Several times I’ve tossed my flat kit to someone in a race who was stranded. Got it back after one race with the tube missing, but a $20 in it’s place :).

Being on the side of the road pleading for one isn’t being fred by carrying one. Besides, it’s not like any other non-fred KQers had a frame pump anyway…

Maybe but if you fly to races regularly a pump is the way to go. No can take CO2 on the plane. I find the best place to mount the mini pump is on the seat tube.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I do carry 2 co2 inflators with 3 extra cylinders. Now that I am carrying a minipump I will probably only carry 1 co2 inflator but keep the 3 cylinders. I realize this seems overkill but I do plenty of 70 milers rides very early in the morning and it is quite rare for me to see another cyclist.

I am with you about having it in the jersey pocket but, as bad as my memory is I am sure I would frequently forget it. The other issue I worry about having it in the jersey pocket is if I wreck and land on it just right things could be real painful.

Nature’s pocket. Can’t get more aero than that.

I’ve put mine under the saddle, but that’s a hassle to get out when you need it.
Currently in a DSW aero bento.

Honestly, if it’s going on the water bottle mounts on a road bike, it’s kinda drafting in behind the bottle anyway.
Don’t overthink it.

When I had a minipump on my bike on the bottle mount, I put it on the non-DS seat tube one.
Felt like the DS would be too cluttered having it there, was very easy to access, etc.
YMMV.

I carry CO2 for events and a pump for everything else. Jersey pocket for me. Seriously if you have to make a thread for an obvious preference issue, you need to train more and lurk less.

I know you were asking about a road bike, but I thought I’d show where I run mine on the TT bike

-Minipump/CO2 - discussion:

I carry both, because I want to fill a little air during mounting, otherwise
I’ve got difficulties in getting the tube properly in the tire. This is difficult
to control with a CO2-Cartouche. Then, also,
as already mentioned by some, if you run out of CO2 you still have the pump.

-Mounting position of the pump:

I carry a water bottle with all of the repairing parts: tools, tube, minipump, CO2,
everything fits in there. Advantage: you can just swap this bottle between bikes and
it should be more aero as having all the parts separately mounted somehow. Disadvantage:
you need one more bottle holder place on the bike.
