Looking to purchase a new helmet for both training and racing, rather than purchasing two. Any suggestions and recommendations?
Specialized Evade
.
This is a good recommendation. I saw a guy commuting in San Francisco last week wearing an aero helmet w/ a shield. Not ideal with the tail jamming into his backpack.
If the limiter is $$ rather than space, the OP may want to look at something like the Giro A2 and then a cheapie road helmet.
Specialized Evade
I was going to say Evade too…but to tell you the truth, I would get a $25 Bell/Louis Garneau/Walmart helmet for training and save the Evade for racing only…that is what I am doing.
LG Course.
very aero and won’t look out of place on your way to work
I quite like the mavic plasma which I wear for both racing and training 99% of the time.
.
Jack of all trades and the master of none.
Better off buying a cheap training helmet and a fast aero helmet for racing.
Possibly consider the Giro Synthe? I do not personally have one, but I am considering it for my next helmet purchase.

but…why? the risk is the same training or racing. safety first!
they pass the same tests…
I vote get an Advantage 2 (can be had pretty inexpensively on eBay… less than $100) and then just get a cheap road helmet for training.
I appreciate the insight and the Gyro Synthe and Specialized Evade look like two great options. I plan to check locally for fit.
Specialized Evade for sure. Good venting and almost as good aerodynamics as the dedicated aero helmets.
i’ll be picking up a synthe next week once the color choice i want is back in stock at LBS.
I’m also planning to buy an aero road helmet, at the moment I’ve narrowed my options to the LG Course, Spec Evade and Giro Synthe. I really really love the Synthe look, but I may go with the LG Course only because it cost half of the Evade/Synthe.
If you are going for speed and value every second, get different helmets for racing and training. If you value comfort over everything else then get the best fitting helmet you desire.
Some days during a TT on a hot day, I contemplate using my road helmet instead at times when I am going super slow trying to climb a hill (I suck at those unfortunately) and the lack of airflow at my climbing speeds makes my head a little too toasty.
I picked up a Giro Atmos helmet on clearance at the end of last summer (2014 closeouts) and love how much more comfortable it is and the better airflow of it over my Advantage 2. But, since I do own both and I don’t like to waste money I race with the aero helmet.
TRI3BA, Giro Air Attack at competitive cyclist for $80. I bought one and like it.

Any basic helmet that you like and a roll of packing tape.
