Best Nose Plug?

Best = No water up nose during flip turns. I’ve tried everything I can find at local tri store and Sports Audacity, but every option seems to either slip partly off or just lose tension.

You’d think that after doing this silly sport for 12 years, I would have either figured out how to swim or how to not get water up my nose by now, but no…

Thanks

Same problem here, to the point that I was on the cusp of quiting the sport altogether after my last race this season. Until I found this:

This plug goes inside the nose, which takes a bit of getting used to, but stays put for up to an hour plus of swimming with very little water getting past into my sinuses. I have had a broken nose and the cartilage is not straight in my nose so regular plus don’t work at all, but the sinus saver works well enough to swim with a snorkel and goggles instead of a dive mask.

I find that nose plugs designed for whitewater kayaking work best for me: http://www.nrs.com/product/20501/cottonmouth-nose-plugs .

I would order a variety of the basic coated wire versions in different sizes (they’re cheap). You can bend them a little for adjustment. Some fit better than others. Even though I have big nose the smaller size works better. If you are swimming outdoors you might consider one of the fancy less greasy sunscreens.

I take 2 little pieces of KT tape or athletic tape and put over the nose pieces. The tape helps a ton with keeping it in place and not having it slip off.

How and when are you exhaling while you swim? In through your mouth, out through your nose, stop holding your breath.

I’ve been using a nose clip since last year. I ended up getting really bad sinus infections from Lake Water so had to resort to wearing a clip. I’d have to check what I’m using now but I’ve used a few different ones and they all seem to work. The current one I have is plastic with some silicon (I think) on the inside to hold it in place. At about an hour into the swim I start to notice that it is there. I’ve swam for up to an hour and half with it and it stays in place. I do NOT exhale through my nose nor try to.

Arena Nose Clip Pro. Just looked it up. I have a half dozen of them stored in various locations.

Yeah, I’ve been using the NRS Cottonmouth for years. I buy them from REI and cut the string off. I run some sand paper over the rubber to get rid of the slick shine and make it stick to my nose better. Make sure your nose doesn’t have any sunscreen or lotion residue or it will slip off.

The HTFU works best.

May be a silly question, but have you ever thought about just skipping the flip turns.

Thanks for this thread I needed better plugs.

My nose is jacked up. Had surgery as a kid. I think its about half the diameter as a normal nose. So I am a pure mouth breather. Stupid nose just let’s a leak of water in.

This!

Simply put, the only way to avoid water entering the nostrils is to exhale out of the nostrils. I mean, really! Simply put, the best defense is a good offense.

But then you’re not a “real” swimmer! (Pink)

Yup. Here’s the thing though, after employing the Total Aversion method of swim training (2x/week), I am finally really getting into it (4-5x/week, most weeks 15-20k).

Notwithstanding the “real swimmer” pink, tracking my times is a good part of motivation. Of course, it’s pretty easy to PR when you start out so sucky.

Yup, I know I need to be better at this. Generally, I hold my breath during the stroke unless I really focus on it. I can exhale thru my nose during flip turns, again when I focus on it.

Thanks for the reminder.

Use a clove of Garlic; if you peel the skin off, the flesh is waxy enough that it stays put up there
