Hi everyone,
I’m looking to return to triathlon after a long break (8 years). I’m looking for a club to train with and would love to hear experiences from folks that have trained with a local NOVA/DC club.

I only have experience with one tri club in the DC area, I would not recommend joining so I won’t mention the name. I would suggest finding a cycling club to ride with and a masters swim group to swim with, plenty of those.
Well that doesn’t help anyone here
.
Hey Dave,
Check us out over at TeamFeXY.org. We’re centered around the Herndon area (Green Lizard Cycling being one of our primary sponsors).
Hopefully we aren’t the team hobbyjogger is talking about

It’s kind of hard to recommend a specific swim or cycling group when I have no clue where the OP wants to train. I live in Northern VA and wouldn’t consider going to DC or Arlington on a regular basis for workouts, would take me nearly an hour to get there on most days.
Team Z. It has members who range in ability from novice to Kona record holder in his AG. It has tailored training plans for different distances and abilities. Details and frequency varies a bit seasonally, but every week features multiple team-led runs, track workouts, boot camps, yoga, training clinics, bike rides, swim sessions, and social hours.
Aside from swimming, weekday workouts are largely centered around Arlington or Herndon. Some sessions – such as yoga – are now virtual. There’s always long runs and long rides on weekends. The runs typically start at places like Columbia Marina or Reston near the trail. We’ve got a bunch of different weekend routes around the area starting in places like Frederick (MD), Haywood (MD), and Nokesville (VA). Team Z is associated with L4 which is almost certainly the largest masters program in the region. L4 uses something like 12 pools.
As for races, Team Z hits many of the area sprint and olympic-distance races (Kinetic, Rev3) but always will do at least one full Ironman and several half-irons. This year the full is Maryland and the “travel” half is Musselman. But there’s certainly no expectation that you race the longer distances. Plenty of folks focus on sprints, olympics, or get together with other Zers on relays. We also usually do marathons in the winter/early spring. There’s great support at team races: food, tents, chairs, coordination of housing, and cheering.
I can provide more info if you like or get you in contact with the Team Z owner/head coach.
I don’t know a lot about it, but DC Tri is another local option.
I do see Team Z and FeXY uniforms all the time on the W&OD. I’ll check them both out. Thanks everyone!
