Best Marathon Training Program (Advanced)

ST’ers

I am looking for a more dedicated and precise marathon training plan…something that has some coaching and thought behind it rather than my simple “X” number of miles per week plan.

I am a 30-34 AG Boston Qualifier (3:03:xx)…qualifying at Rock and Roll DC in 2013. I ran Boston last year, hoping to finally break the 3:00:00 barrier, but was “educated” by the course in my first Boston. My training has never been dedicated to just running and strength. I typically race an Ironman, a few 70.3’s, a Marthon, and a handfull of local triathlons each calendar year…I’ve trained by feel mostly and setting weekly time/mileage goals at 12-20 hours/week. This has allowed great flexibility in “missing” a workout due to work or family commitments and then simply going longer on the weekend if needed to reach the set goals. I’ve had moderate success in a number of races, and would consider myself “competitive,” being an age-gorup podium finisher in most local races, a few 70.3’s, etc…but have never been able to be a dominant racer. That being said, I find my self getting a bit bored with training and racing lately. I just raced Ironman Japan in August, have a 70.3 in a few weeks, and will be racing Ironman Melbourne in March. After Melbourne I would like to simply focuss on the Marathon.

I plan on running Berlin in September 2015 and Tokyo in Febraury of 2016, before my wife and I return back to the states from our deployment in Japan. In those two marathons I desperately want to 1) Break 3:00hrs and 2) Qualify again for Boston to run in 2017. I feel like my first BQ was a bit lucky…I trained for 16 weeks with max mileage weeks in the mid 40’s, 4 twenty milers, and mostly adhoc runs when I decided I wanted to go run…amongst swimming and biking as well…time to get serious

Who has or what is the strongest marathon program? Hanson? Higdon? Fitzgerald?

Jack Daniels or Pete Pfitzinger. Though marathon training is pretty simple. Lots of miles and 2-3 quality workouts per week.

Marius Bakken’s program

.

there is NO coaching in a already made plan. Plenty of tough, might just not be the right ones

that said, plenty of pre made plan that are decent to prepare you.

I think these two books are the best out there. But if you can find a local group that does speed work that’ll really help. I’ve done all my fastest marathons when meeting w a group once or twice a week. Especially if there are a few fast people in the group.

Good luck.

Agree with Denali…Jack Daniels Running formula. buy that book. read it. learn. Im in the process of using it now for Philly and ive gotta say, its awesome.

Another vote for Pfitzinger’s Advanced Marathoning. I feel that endurance focus really helped me hold pace in the late miles and break through the sub-3 barrier.

I’d read Daniel’s, Canova, Pfitz, maybe some Lydiard and get a solid idea about what it’s all about. Then I’d take something like a Pfitz plan and loosely follow it, adapting as I go for what my needs are.
