I am looking for something waterproof that I can wear in my sprint race this weekend that will show me what pace I am running at. I want to make sure I am running as fast as I am able and my brain has tricked me recently in training!
watch.
Funny. Distance is not always marked clearly in races I’ve been in. Something with gps may be better.
Preride the course on your bike and spray a dot every 10th of a mile with marking paint.
A bucket…if you haven’t puked in it you could be going harder.
Ok frou-frou men. I’ve got a bitch-slap waiting for you here.
Who has a ST rated smart answer for me?
You can get a forerunner from garmin without HRM fairly cheap, plus I heard they have new cheaper version out now as well.
Amazon has some good prices on the Garmin Products.
Good job at 24 hours !
Thanks Dave!! I was looking for you, but I kinda forgot the info on what bike you had at the race!
It was kinda confusing in the morning. Several logistical issues came up without my knowledge of them !!! I was doing well in the race (for me) until my seat post decided to self destruct into a non-repairable state. About 1.5 hours was spent by me and Colorado Multisport.
When I pulled the plug, I stopped by your ‘estate’ but no one was there. I did see your blade hanging in the bike stand though!
Check out the sale on the Garmin 305’s, and don’t forget that powerbar offers a $50 rebate.
BTW, what sprint are you doing - the parker one?

The instantaneous pace readouts from GPS devices aren’t very good at human running speeds. At least not the previous generation of forerunners, in my experience. Signal, averaging window, linearity of course, etc., all affect instantaneous pace readout, which may vary as much as a minute or even two per mile. Great for doing the post-mortem afterwards, but I personally would not try to pace a race with one.
Once you start involving gadgets and running, the pace goes down.
I know you dismissed this suggestion – but go out there and mark the course on your bike or with a borrowed GPS, then race with a watch. It’s cheap, accurate and foolproof.
I have a GPS unit, but I only carry it once on any new run route. I mark the miles, either mentally or with a rock or a stick off the trail. Then I never need to bring the GPS again.
watch.
I thought that had to be the best possible answer until I read…

…that should be on a t-shirt.
Come on bigun’. I’m a little bitty fellow. I’ll have on a pair of overalls and an Atlanta Braves baseball cap. You can’t miss me.
I was being serious. If you’re that concerned about pacing yourself, take 30 minutes out of your day and mark the course with marking paint that will wash away in a month. You asked for waterproof and inexpensive, I’ll assume you want effective also. Marked intervals and a timer, seems to work for track and field events.
You can’t beat this one!
balls.
grow some.
it’s a bloody sprint race. there is NO pacing involved.
Polar RS200?
if you know the route you can try mapmyrun.com and fill in the name of the road and the city and map it and it will show mile markers and distance. It’s very accurate when I compare it to my bike and car odometers.
good luck
