Best Floor Pump Chuck

I already have two decent floor pumps. What I lack is a decent chuck/head. Suggestions? I have a disc adapter, but I want a sturdy, easy to use chuck for presta.

Silca Hiro. Drop the mic.

I have this, the standard Silca chuck (which is also very good), the Silca crack pipe, a Topeak Joe Blow head, and a few other crack pipes. Silca chucks rule the world.

I agree with the above poster about the Silca being the best, but it’s also super expensive. I really dig the new Lezyne chucks, and they’re not too pricey:

The Lezyne ABS1 Pro that threads on is nice…however, make sure that your removable valve cores are securely threaded in, as it has on a few occasions unscrewed these from the valve when removing.

What he said. Now drop the mic.

I bought a standard Silca chuck. It looks beautiful, but didn’t last long (less than a year). I think i just need to replace the rubber gasket. Right now it just sits in my garage looking pretty, and i end up using my bontrager pump with the stock head instead. Kind of a bummer.

The hiro looks sweet, but if i were buying again i would give them Arundel copy of the Hiro a try instead because it is half the price of the Silca. Other Arundel products I’ve used are top notch, so i would expect this to be the same. I saw it in a bike shop in Dallas two weeks ago (Mad Duck) and it looked amazing. https://www.arundelbike.com/...ct/hansel-pump-head/

Another vote for Lezyne. I have two Lezyne pumps. One with the ABS head and one with a slip chuck that works well with my disc cover. I’ve had both for a while with no issues. Silca sure is pretty but my 2 lezyne pumps each cost about the same as one Silca head.

Hello wacomme and All,

I have one of these … it is OK but takes some fiddling to adjust.

i have this too and like it, however my wife just can’t use it… i think that’s mostly her but she’s probably not the only one.
also second the warning about removable valve cores, thats not fun :frowning:

Make that three.

Thank you for the replies. I think I’ll try the Lezyne 1 Pro (I used to have the older version, and if this one is better . . .). The price is right. And if the Lezyne doesn’t work out I’ll get the Silca.

I can echo this experience. I see statements occasionally about the overwhelming quality of silca products, but I think the quality really only extends to their current marketing efforts. Despite the text on their website, I’ve been through FOUR of these in the last 3 years

The new 242 gasket utilizes a high tech and very red, fully synthetic elastomer base material rather than a carbon black filled natural rubber of previous gaskets. This unique bright red gasket borrows from industries which require air-tight seals in the harshest of environments, and tests to a life expectancy of more than 5X the carbon filled rubber or Buna-N materials used previously.

Maybe the Hiro sidelocking lever is the answer, but I’ll look elsewhere.

Good plan. Though… I spent a lot more than $65 on mediocre chucks before I bought the HIRO.

I have the Hiro and the Lezyne ABS-1 and have had better luck with the Lezyne. I really, really want to love the HIRO. It’s embarrassing, but I may be the only person who can’t figure out how to use the HIRO chuck. I have a problem with losing air when I release it.

I’ve had the KCNC pump head for several years and it has been fantastic. It’s also much cheaper than the Hirame and Silca, whose price I had a hard time justifying.

Make that four. My hand pump threads on and it’s annoying for my SO and I when it unscrews the core.

Greatzaa, do you know if you have a first generation Hiro or a newer one? The first gen had less head space internally so you had a very small range between holding the valve core open or not… the newer version doesn’t hold the valve core open unless you push it on more than 20mm deep, so it’s smaller and easier to use, but also can’t or at least shouldn’t be able to ‘let the air out’ unless you are trying. Please email us at support@silca.cc if you have questions or concerns… we have the industry’s best warranty, so if you aren’t happy, we’ll get it fixed.

I have a newer SuperPista Hiro. I think it is probably just me. Your customer service has always been exceptional. I will PM you.

Not directed at you…Do people really have that much of a problem with the stock chucks on their pumps??? That is one bike product I have never even though once, never mind twice about. Silca makes great products, I’ve bought some of their other stuff, but $65 dollars for a pump chuck? Geez…

Do people really have that much of a problem with the stock chucks on their pumps?
I was content for years with generic pump heads. Many of them are decent. Then, I got a disc wheel and had to get a chuck that was compatible. That is when I learned how much better good chucks are. Typical chucks loose several PSI when removing them, and that is if you are careful while removing. (And don’t forget the extra pump cycles needed when you lose air during installation.) These great chucks lose nothing. And, their installation and removal require no care… they just work.

Really, the standard Silca chuck is freakin’ awesome. The HIRO simply takes that to the next level of convenience and is disc-compatible.

Do you need a great chuck? No, just get a high quality gauge and figure out how much air you lose (and accuracy) compared to your pump’s gauge and adjust accordingly when you inflate. That will get you to good most of the time. However, if you have a good pump gauge and a good chuck, your tire pressure is much more likely to be where you are aiming.
