Best cycling shorts for tall skinny guys

So here’s the deal…I’m 6’2", 170 lbs with a 31" waist and 34" inseam. I like my bike shorts to fit real snug to prevent “motion” in all the wrong places, meaning I generally need a size Small, however then the legs are always short which I hate…I really prefer more like 8"-9" inseam but seems all the smalls are always too short.

Any suggestions for longer inseam size Small shorts? Or should I just get comfy with showin’ more of my sexy legs?

JM

Assos…very snug, great fit.

You aren’t even close to “tall and skinny” by cycling standards, sorry. You just need to buy Euro/race cut shorts. Probably even a size L. The new PearlIzumi P.R.O. stuff is really nice. Sugoi’s RS line is also good. Pearl’s PRO stuff is where I’d start. I think the fit is excellent. For reference, I’m 6’3", 154lbs with a 37" inseam.

DAMN!!! You’re right…I guess I’m a fatty compared to you…thanks for the suggestions, will start there.

I just make sure it is a bib short…

I second the Sugoi RS bib. It’s pretty slim. I’m 29 waist and 33 inseam and the small is snug. hem hits just above the knee. Has a little of the corset feeling too IIRC.

You could go the higher end route Assos, Giordana, Rapha, etc. and I’ll admit there’s some comfort improvement, but fit may not necessarily be much better. Giordana’s forma lines actually fit me worse (my torso is apparently long?).

Damn, you are skinny. All legs huh? are you 192cm tall? Do you still ride 56cm frame?

I’m super fat compare to you…195cm 200lb…I should sign up for the biggest loser show

Personally, I think Assos fits like shit. Assos is cut for the guys that can afford it. They claim it is traditional european sizing, but I think it’s fits like a bag. Maybe it used to fit well, but now it’s cut to fit the typical physiology of an Assos buyer - a desk jokey with lots of money.

The PearlIzumi PRO line is easily the competitor of any of the “high end” stuff. It’s as high end as Assos & Rapha, and higher end than Castelli (even Rosso Corse line) and definitely nicer than Giordana (even their premium). It’s also the first clothing that I’ve seen in a long time that really fits the way it says in tops and bottoms – form fit // race cut. I never thought their old stuff was that nice, but I think the Garmin team partnership forced them to up their game. They also got bought by Shimano, which meant big $$ influx, which also helps.

Finally, someone says it. I almost got run off the forum a couple years ago when I dared to complain a pair of Assos shorts my girlfriend got me didn’t fit that well (she thought she was doing something really nice buying me some “top of the line” shorts). I am about 6’ 155. Everyone told me they are not supposed to fit well when you are standing but when in riding position is when the shine, that I wasn’t sophisticated enough to know what they were supposed to fit like, that my position must be shit because if it was good the Assos would fit like a glove, etc. Nope.

I have a pair of Sugoi Evolution bibs and a pair of Sugoi RS bibs and they are both great. Honestly, dollar for dollar I think the Evolutions are nicer. The RS are very nice, but I don’t think they are $50 or whatever it is nicer than the Evolutions.

I am interested in your comments about the new Pearl Izumi stuff. I gave up on them a few years ago as all of their stuff had a very “American” fit and cut to them and it was all to boxy on me but haven’t worn anything PI in 2+ years. If their newer stuff has more of a slim, Euro fit to it, I may consider them again.

I have 4 Assos bibs, 6 Pearl Izumis bibs/shorts and bunch of others. I like the Pearl Izumi lycra material maybe even better than Assos, however the snug is better on Assos and the Chamois on Assos is 100% better than Pearl Izumi. Also running in Assos bibs after a ride is not a problem. U use Pearl Izumi for short bike rides or trainer rides. Assos for longer rides and bricks.

Its not about the hype or the money as the higher end PI cost is comparable with ASSOS.

I think you may be right (is the evolution usually the bib they use for team kits?), but I got the RS bibs on clearance and they breathe a little better. Fit is the same for both.

For Rappstar, I’m also curious about the new pearl stuff. I gave up on pearl before also because nothing ever fit nicely and because everything was over-logoed.

I’ve tried and really like the Louis Garneau Neo Power bibs.

I have the same problem at 6’0 160 lb…long leg short torso

If you like the current Sugoi RS and Evolution try out the new RSE line coming out early next year. It’s Sugoi’s shot at at truly top of the line short that can compete with high end euro shorts pedal stroke for pedals stroke and at a bit better price. It takes the amazing pad of the RS, improves it with some additional venting then it blends the amazing ventilation with the smooth finish of the Evolution short. The look of the short is definitely a bit more progressive with smooth euro inspired lines and a pro level fit. Check it out.

To the original poster, yup, with your build most of the higher end shorts geared towards skinny cyclists will probably fit well. Just shop around for the right inseam length. Bibs, no bibs, that’s your call. Sometimes being really tall makes bibs fit a bit tight but at the same time being skinny gives them a bit more room so you should be fine.

I tend to need stuff for lean people and have had good luck with Capo Forma bib shorts. I’m 5’ 10", 138 lbs, 29 in waist 32 inseam fwiw.

Any idea on price? The RS and Evolution are pretty nice, if the RSE are supposed to be even nicer, I’d consider them, but not if they are significantly more than the RS. At that point it seems like dimishing returns.

When you say early next year, do you mean calendar year (Jan/Feb) or tri/cyling year (June/July)?

I like the Hincapie bibs. I guess Big George is a tall skinny guy.

Mike

You’re dimensions are identical to mine. I don’t wear anything except DeSoto bibs in medium. Mine are all pre-400 mile versions, as they just don’t seem to wear out.

I agree that Assos are totally over rated. Of all the shorts I own they are the least comfortable. But if Pearl Izumi are so much better sized for people with a standard tall skinny tri build then I don’t get why their size chart suggests I am size ‘S’ on waist size (31") and ‘XXL’ on inseam (33.5"). My guess from this is that the size M will have really tight shoulder straps and the L will be baggy around my backside.
Why are sports kit size charts (in Europe) always aligned to short fat body shapes?

tall + skinny on Slowtwitch = 6’5+ and <140 lbs.
