Teammates…I am tricking out a new Valdora PHX CF frame with a gruppo which–I believe–will be mostly a Dura-Ace flavor, but I’m struggling over whether to get the gold standard Dura-Ace crankset for its stiffness, or to save weight and hope the FSA K-Force is stiff and reliable enough to go the distance. Appreciate the thoughts of the best endurance gearheads out there. Thx. b2
D/A.
FSA is just the new Ritchie.
Thx Bigadam! You’re boosting my confidence one vote at a time…b2
I’d go Dura Ace
.
Neither.
If neither, what then? Campy Record?
For the money - 105.
105 cranks recieved some poor reviews on roadbike review.
I am many other here have been on the bikes for over two decades. It was not until 2004 did people say “is that crank stiff” - it is all a marketing ploy started by the folks at Shimano and the creators of ISIS. Stiff…I think that is funny. My sock and shoe sole has more flex than my crank arm.
Thx all…any K-Force dudes or dudettes out there willing to say a word or two? b2
Stick with the DA crank. I’ve had some issues (along with many others after I started asking about fixes, etc.) with my left crank arm loosening on my FSA carbon cranks. They look a little nicer (black and red) on my SLC, but the DA is just as light. Stiffness? I sure can’t flex any crank so I don’t care.
Dura Ace. Just this week my buddy was riding the trainer and his FSA crank left crank came off. This is the 5th person I know who this has happened to and I even got witness 2 of them happen.
I have both, including the SRM version of the K-force and I have to say I prefer the FSA to the DA, but there isn’t much between them except the FSA looks much better. They both work equally well for me, but my FSA is a bit lighter.
I had both, the Dura Ace was much much better. Stiffer feeling, better shifting and quiet. FSA, bit lighter and continually creaked under standing load. Taking the whole assembly off and cleaning/greasing works for a while but the creaking comes back.
That said I now use Zipp cranks, way lighter and they seem every bit as good as my Dura Ace did.
Scrap the shimano bike…Campy Chorus will cost less and the gruppo is lighter, the cranks and bb is stiffer with better q-factor b/w the cranks, and most importantly the gruppo is way sexier. Campy Chorus is Dura Ace level gruppo—not an Ultegra comparable gruppo as many misinformed cyclists believe. AND DID I SAY CAMPY CHORUS WILL LOOK WAY SEXIER!
shifting doesn’t have anything to do with what type of crank your using does it??? i have creaking with my SLK’s too those fucking pieces but im too lazy to take the crank appart right now. maybe ill sell my car and get the zipp cranks someday
Shimano Dura-Ace. No doubt.
Second choice would be Shimano FC-R700 if you want compact.
I am an FSA K-Force compact crank fan…especially with the ceramic bearings. I have them on 2 cervelos, my soloist carbon and my p3 carbon. I have had DA for years, FSA is better, simply better.
I have no vested interest in FSA.
keep in mind you can use the d/a chainrings whatever crank you choose so shifting would be almost identical.

Emilio - how? Honest question, how is the FSA better?
