Hey all,
I’m looking for recommendations on a very good COLD weather running glove. I live in Northern Indiana, and my hands just don’t do well in cold weather. They get very cold, numb and painful when I’m running in weather 40 degrees and less. After I’m done running, and I try to warm them up the pain is almost too much to bare. So, I’d like a super warm glove that is easy to take off and put back on even when my hands are slightly sweaty. In other words, I don’t want the insides of the gloves to pull out when I’m taking my hands out (making it extremely difficult to put them back on). Can any of you cold weather runners please recommend your favorite glove (and why, if it’s not too much trouble).
Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Nate

For really cold weather a set of mittens will keep those pinkies a lot warmer;)

Agree … mittens will keep the fingers much warmer… a set that have a wind resistant layer on the front also helps… for really cold you could do light gloves underneath and a wind resistant mitten overtop.
Something woolen so you stay warm even though sweating. I use the cheap wool mitten you can get at Northern Tool or other similar places. I like the ones with half fingers and where the mitten part can be folded back if they get too warm. Can wear thin glove underneath them if really cold.
I like Sugoi Firewall gloves.
For super cold weather, thick mitton gloves are the best
.
I use down-filled mittens…keeps my hands toasty when it gets really cold.
Keeping your core temp up while running is the most effective way to keep your hands warm. A vest will go a long ways.
Glomitt’s are my favorite, I have two pairs of Under Armour Glommitts that I use, slip a hand warmer in the back of the hand, flip the lid down when it gets cold, up when they get hot.
Tube socks with finger holes used to be my go to move. Rarely had my hands get cold down to zero degrees with a light windbreaker (back then) and the tube sleeves.
Did mittens for years in Alaska, but my hands got so sweaty on longer runs that my gloves froze. Here’s what I use for colder runs now: http://www.180s.com/pages/catalog_view.aspx?g=1%2C2&y=2&i=18&c=1
Thanks to everybody who responded. I’ll get some mittens ASAP. With all of the suggestions provided here, I hope I can nip this in the bud. I’ll let you know how it works out.
The thumb is like the guard post in your mitten. When it gets really cold out there on the back side of the course, you way have to allow the thumb to come into the main mitten unit and warm himself up for a while before reporting back for duty. The thumb has a key job, so don’t hold it against him.
I have some mittens for xc skiing I use, they keep the wind off but are not too klunky. LL Bean makes a wool and leather mitten called a “chopper mitt” that will get the job done in the most awful conditions on the bike or run.
there are cheaper ones out there that will be fine, but something like this for running in the single and negative digits will always get the job done

Here are two of my favorites that I started using last year for both cold and not so cold days:

Thanks again for all of the comments/suggestions. I’m going to head out now to the running store to get a pair.
Just use your cycling gloves. Especially old worn out one’s. Your not gripping bats and going 20mph, a few holes won’t matter. Why waste the money. Temp ranges
are about 15-20f colder.
I have the same problem with my hand getting cold often. I have a 3 layer option. Just plain $1 knit gloves for cool days when i just need a little something. I also have some nice Mizuno fleece-type gloves for colder weather. Then, I have some mittens which are just wind barriers that I wear over the gloves when it really gets cold. The mittens don’t have any insulation to them… they just make a huge difference by cutting out the wind. Very cold temperatures (let’s say below 10 degrees F) I’ll triple up with the knit gloves under the Mizuno gloves, under the windproof mittens. I typically don’t run once it gets below zero F; but i have done so with this set up and it has worked for me.

How cold are you running in these? I just got the Pearl Izumi equivalent and wore them today for a 90 minute run in 30 degree weather with 15 mph winds and a wind chill around 15 degrees; BIGGEST MISTAKE I HAVE EVER MADE ON A RUN!! The guy at the running store said he wears them in this weather and they are toasty but they were completely worthless. I seriously considered taking them off thinking that might help, but I didn’t have the dexterity in my fingers to even try. The mitten cover thing didn’t seem to help at all, and they are advertised as super wind proof, ha! It took almost half an hour after my run for the pain to subside. They will be going back to the store tomorrow and I will return to using the double layer fleece gloves I got at the hardware store for $10 last year. They are ugly and not that comfortable but at least I don’t freeze.

I’ve used them down to -4° and have been fine. I have poor circulation and get cold fingers and toes. The key for me is to tuck all my fingers in for the first mile or so until the blood is flowing. After that, put the shell up, then if warm-or long- enough just use the fingers with no shell. I’ve found that if I get gloves a little bigger my hands stay warmer.
I use Grabber hand warmers with gloves on those super cold days.
