Any recommendations? I was looking at Pearl Izumi shorts over the weekend and some of those shorts’ gel inserts were almost a 1/2 inch thick! Don’t people say the padding should be somewhat minimal? Anyways, any input on cheap, good shorts. (Mine smell too bad between laundry days.)
the performance century shorts seem fine, especially if you can get deals on them (at the end of the year they often do a two for one deal.)
.
Pearl shorts are good for $40 or so. do not get anything with gel
I use the Performance Elite shorts. They are in the $55 range, but can usually be found for $30-35 with coupons and sales. I’ve always wanted to try the expensive shorts.

don’t ever “try” expensive shorts unless you are prepared to replace your wardrobe
.
Performance has all thier shorts on sale right now - buy one get one free until the 22nd. Phone orders only.

Voler’s. www.velowear.com . I like them better than the Pearl Izumi Microsensor’s I’ve got which cost almost 3x as much.
I second that. You also might want to give their bibs a try. They are a great value and keep things down below in better shape.
Just got a pair of canari shorts - don’t know what model exactly, but they’re a basic 6-panel short. $35 at REI. So far they’re just fine for short to moderate length rides.
Don’t skimp on shorts, it ain’t worth it. Go to e-bay and save there.
STP often has various Canari bike shorts at very good prices.
The basic 8 panel ones are usually $30, and the Pro model (highly recommended) are $40 (“full retail” is like $70). Pro bib shorts are $50.
I got 2 more pairs of the Pros just recently, plus a pair for my wife. I have found them to be equal or greater comfort to PI and Castelli shorts that I paid double or triple the price for. I would happily do a century wearing these shorts. (well, at least no less happily than wearing any other pair I’ve owned)
Great! Thank you. Is there a certain short there or are they all good? I like the price on this one but am wondering if this is inexpensive for a reason…http://www.velowear.com/product_detail.asp?cartid=0776050309002156&cat=CAT-BOTTOMS-MENS-SHORT&productid=1110030%20BLK%20XSM
Whatever kind you get, they will be more comfy and you’ll have less trouble with saddle sores if you wash them after every ride. My favorite are Descente AeroX bibs but they don’t fall in the cheap category. Desoto power shorts are nice and simple and fairly cheap. My wife has some Hind shorts she really likes. They were about $50.
I’ll second that: Sierra Trading Post has some Canari’s, or better yet, some Giordana shorts for under $50. They even has some Assos stuff pretty cheap (for Assos that is).
I second the vote for Voler!
I will never pay less than $40 for shorts again. The cheap ones chafed my balls.
I have a few pair of Voler’s Titano bib shorts and love them. I also have a couple of pair of their Team and Peloton shorts as part of team race kits. So far as I can tell, they’re all about the same. The Peloton short has a slightly different panel layout, but I think that has more to do with making the shorts more ‘printable’ than anything to do with comfort.
Sign up for their email notifications. They do a sale every month though that email distribution.
Pearl Izumi makes a great pair of tri shorts that run about $49 bucks. If you are looking for something to both train and race in- these are pretty good. They last a long time and are really comfortable. I use them pretty regularly for training and actually prefer them over my Castelli shorts which cost $129 big ones.
Who makes thicker shorts? I prefer the better support from something that holds “stuff” a little tighter together.
