I’m in need of some new brakes to replace the junk fsa ones I have now, thinking of getting ultegra but is the dura ace worth the extra money? Or any other suggestions, also I would be upgrading the pads as well.
combining weight and performance I’d say EE cycle works… but just performance Dura Ace
holy s*** those are some expensive brakes, but yeah I recall reading some reviews somewhere that people didn’t notice much difference between the ultegra and dura ace, just wondering if anyone on here has any input, I do like the EE brakes though, but the price is a little too much
.
Dunno if they are still available, but the best brakes I have ever used (and still use to this day) are the Mavic SSC brakes w/ a leaf spring.
Great power, modulation and control.
Aluminum or carbon rims?
105 or Ultegra should be good enough with Good pads (shimano or those kool stop ones). If your frame is direct mount the 105s and ultegras should still be good. Those direct mount brakes feels better and stronger to me that the traditional ones too.

According to VeloNews brake test done a while back: “For performance, Shimano’s Dura-Ace 7800 brake did the best job of melding power and modulation. The eebrake clearly wins the battle of balancing power, modulation and weight, while Shimano’s 7900 brake has the most raw stopping power, hands down.”

A different test by Fairwheel Bikes also shows the Dura Ace-7900 brake to be the top choice: http://djconnel.blogspot.com/2014/09/fairwheel-bikes-brake-test-mechanical.html
I have EE and have had the past 3 DA brakes and the EE brakes work the best when headed down HC climbs… that said, my next road bike will have hydraulic disc brakes. I’m not a fan typically of the VN tests - they toss in pretty weak subjective ‘scores’ along side their quantitative measurements which skew things horribly. They also don’t substantiate quant scores; for example, in their road bike review, they very clearly favor the qualitative feel of the Supersix, but the quant scores put the Supersix far, far below other bikes, most notably the Sworks Tarmac, which would tell me they need to spend some more time substantiating ideal ranges for the quant scores, rather than giving the impression that higher is better. I do trust the Fairwheel tests, and read down to see that the initial 3mm of cable pull slots it lower than DA, Red and THM (much love for THM all around), but the reviewer is very clear that this initial 3mm is also what makes this brake so great in terms of amazing clearance. note: Cane Creek has taken over EE brake production and it looks to be going really well. EE brakes are only expensive until you look at AX-lightness and THM…
The new FSA brakes look really nice, though it is largely taking the EE design: https://www.bikerumor.com/...ron-tt-brakes-21.jpg
I’d also seriously consider the SRAM hydraulic rim brakes, if you were getting new brifters.
note: all of the brakes I recommend route the cable near vertical in front of the headtube.
Sorry about that all my wheelsets are aluminum brake tracks
.
On the basis that you asked for ‘any other suggestions’ I would propose the Sram Hydraulic road rim brakes, but obviously that would involve upgrading the shifters and possibly the entire drivetrain if you’re not running Sram already.
Best of luck whatever you decide to get.
The Ultegra 6800 pack a good performance for the price. We’ve had these on my wife’s bike for a couple of years. The OEM calipers were junk and would jam up after any ride in the rain. Ultegra’s are great - the current gen calipers have an exceptionally robust design that will keep on rolling no matter what, so long as your cables are clean.

Interestingly, I just posted this on IG yesterday…however, that option would require new levers, and perhaps derailleurs as well.

The best rim brakes I’ve had thus far are the Ultregra 6800 and Dura Ace 9000. You can get the Dura Ace 9000 for 30-40% off right now, since they are making way for 9100. Don’t forget a decent set of brake pads, especially if you have carbon rims. My favorite are the SwissStop Black Prince.

Get dual pivot brakes, I have Campy Centaur, they’re great

105/ultegra/DA are all the same mechanism, just different weights. I cannot notice a difference from 105 to the current DA brakes. EE brakes are very nice but not worth the money in my opinion.
10-speed? Did you set them up yourself, and if so were there any issues?

Yeah, I used the 10sp set so I wouldn’t need to change drivetrain bits.
Setup was dead easy. Bleeding wasn’t difficult at all (there are good YouTube vids). Haven’t needed to touch the hydraulics since the initial setup (only ~5 months and ~2k miles so far) and they have a consistent feel all the time.
that looks freakin sweet, but would require the whole drivetrain upgrade correct? currently running 105 shifters with dura ace rd
EE brakes are by far the best I’ve ever used, prefer them to any of the Shimano brakes (which are not bad, just not in the same league).
