Best "Bang" for my training english pound?

All,

Quick one for you all to ponder.

I live 10-11 miles from my place of work. I have a lunch hour and access to showers/changing facilities. Goals for 2005 are London Marathon (April) and IM Switzerland (July).

The weekend is my ‘long bike’ time and I swim c. 3x per week before work at a local(ish) pool. At present I am cycling only on the indoor trainer 3x per week between 60-90 mins a session. (Usually at the lower end of this scale!)

I’m trying to figure out the best way to organise my available time to maximise my training and up my hours to around 15 hours per wk. from my current 8-10.

Would it be worth running to AND from work in a single day or using the lunch hour for shorter faster efforts daily? Perhaps a comination of both? A one-way run to/from work would be approx 80mins for a man of my limited running ability.

Suggestions please…?

yes, no time is better spent than by riding/running to/from work. then, use your “lunch” time also. None of this time takes time away from family or other interests

Frank,

No children, but I do have a wife who ‘just doesn’t get it’!

A few years ago with another job, I would run to and from work, but my distance was about 4 miles each way, so 8 miles total per day. I think 10 to 11 miles from work seems like a perfect distance for a bike ride to and from work, if it is generally safe and motor traffic is not too bad. On some days, when days get longer in the spring, you can add cycling mileage to or back from work and ride a longer than 22 mile day. But even 22 miles each day seems good to do at least 4-5 days a week for a future Ironman.

Running during lunch hour seems a better fit than running to and from work due to the long distance (unless you can take public transport to work, and then run back–that could work quite well, but I would not do that 5 days per week, every week). Does that help?

PS. Got ‘the Office’ season 1 and season 2 DVDs from my local (US) library–Hilarious!! Almost as funny as ‘trigger happy TV’ (I wish I could get those) …

Thanks very much - always good to get the benefit of other people’s experience. I do plan to ride in the spring and as biking is most definitely my poorest discipline, this is a must. So, with a minimum 1hour bike per day + a 45 minute run say 3x per week and I’m close to 10 hours. One long run and a long bike and I’m there - and that’s not even counting the swimming!

Agree on the trigger happy TV - hilarious! Never really got into the office for some reason though…
