My weekly long run is getting boring because it is almost always the same route (on my way to work). Any suggestions for a comfortable, lightweight AM/FM radio to wear on the arm? Safety nazis :-)…please don’t harass me for running w/ headphones! I have safe route and I promise I’ll never do it on the bike!!
i use portable music players as well as radios. mp3 is a tough choice in the past that is beginning to tighten up with some good products.
but for radio, i suggest the panasonic. i’ve used one for many years and it still goes. it’s a water resistant model and it DOES work. i run in the rain every chance i get and this thing keeps going. it has 5 presets that are easy to set. the armband is a nice feature as well.
sorry that i don’t have the model number handy, but a google search for “panasonic armband water resistant radio” shouls find it.
oh, and the reception is as good as these devices will get, which isn’t great but it will do nicely with stations within 50 miles.
forget all the problems with not paying attention and getting injured, raped, abducted by aliens, my safety warning is different.
While not strictly a problem with the music itself, I warn against the TYPE of music being played.
ONCE, I ran while listening to AC/DC Back in Black. I hold two unofficial World Records from that run. The 2km up hill running record and simultaneously the highest heartrate by a surviving human! NEVER listen to AC/DC Back in Black unless you’re very late for something REALLY! important.
On another occassion I was downhill skiing with same Walkman on, same AC/DC tape. I was at a new resort, in the fog, skiing on unknown terrain…fast! (I was a ski pro for 10 years and competed in all 3 freestyle disciplines for 3 years as well). While not Permin Zurbriggen, I can ski. Well, AC/DC was pumping through what’s left of my alleged brain and I’m going hell for leather down some Black Diamond hill with my brother trying to keep up. I find myself airborne mid turn and instinctively bend my knees waiting for the landing. I hid a rut at about Warp 7. you know, when nearby trees start to stretch in your peripheral vision?! I was thrown high in to the air and time slooooooowed way down…then stoped!
I woke, thinking I was dead. I had no hat, no goggles, one glove staring at what I soon realizd was the inside of a cloud (I thought the white mist meant I had died!) I was momentarily unable to feel any pain. Then an all over, non specific pain started, just as I was wondering about the voices in my head. I slowly cam to understand the voices were from the headphones, stretched at full length of the wire and AC/DC was still pumpin’ away.
No specific pain, toes wiggle, fingers wiggle, head turns etc. Just then my brother appears (having climbed back up to see me) and says “F%$K…that was AMAZING! Can you move?”
I think I was out for about 30-60 seconds (based on how long he took to get back to where I was)
I no longer use the Walkman and have thrown out the AC/DC tape.
I strongly recommend you choose your music carefully
