I have been looking at buying a new aero helmet with a visor. I really like the Giro Selector, Bell Javelin, and LG Vorttice, but can’t find any good reviews.
What is everyone’s opinion? How cool are they? I live in Mississippi and it is usually around 90 degrees by the time I get off the bike.
I also average around 24 mph and currently use a Giro Advantage 2.
My experience with the Selector (TT’s only, anywhere from 10-25 miles) is that it has ZERO ventilation, I sweat like I never have before when I wear it, if you are looking for a well-ventilated aero helmet, the Selector is not it.
I ride the LG Vorttice and like it a lot. I still sweat a TON to the point I often can not see perfectly out the visor but I do feel that the airflow does work and keeps me cooler than other aero helmets I have used (Giro Selector, Giro Advantage, and LAS Crono). I used it last in at Trioka 1/2 Iron when I got off the bike it was 90º and I am planning on riding it for Kona this year.
Why are you limiting the search to helmets that have visors?

IMO, best helmet available.
I really like the concept of a visor and I always end up looking out the top of my sunglasses… Isn’t it supposed to be a little more aero too?

My experience with the Selector has been the same. I also only use it for TTs, so it’s not really an issue for me for the short duration I’m wearing it. It does help some if you take the visor off.
I think the jury is out as to whether a visor is faster or not. I would guess it is going to be hotter, however.
lazer tardiz looks like it might be good. anybody have experience with them??
How come ever time I read ST, everyone rides 24 mph, but when I do races very few actually ride that fast. Is it bad if you only average 22 mph on your rides?
My n=1: No problem with the Selector up to 88* (and humid) in training. Also tried it with sunglasses at the same temp, and there was more airflow, but didn’t seem to matter much for me.
Used it at IMC this year (temps ~80*) and felt fine.
I know some Liquigas riders wore wingspans with a visor in the TdF TTs. I don’t know if RP is going to make them for the public though.
I have a wingspan and I swear the ventilation is better than my road helmet.
