Not sure if this belongs in Coffee Shop forum or running forum but here goes. I’m running Berlin this year and taking two weeks vacation to make a proper vacation out of it. Flying from the States a week before and staying a week after. Plan is to fly into Frankfurt, head to eastern Switzerland for a few days, then Austria for a few days, then Germany the second week. It’ll be my sister and 80 year old parents. Any suggestions for must visit cities/attractions? Will probably use trains as much as possible, but how is it renting a car in these countries? It’ll be my first time in Europe so any advice is much appreciated.
If you’re into driving, drive the autobahn. Keep right, pass left.
If you’re really into driving well, drive the Nurburgring. Frankfurt is the nearest airport to fly into, then 3ish hours from there to the circuit.
My daughter lived in Vienna for several years. I got to spend a lot of time in Austria, including a magical Christmas and new years.
So … go to Vienna. It’s an amazing city - the art, music and museums are next level. As is the coffee shop culture.
A couple of specifics:
• opera house
• Belvedere
• Albertina
• Schönbrunn Palace
• Prater (my wife and I watched New Year’s fireworks from the Ferris wheel. It was like a fairytale.)
• Danube river walk (this is the only place I went every single time I went to Vienna)
• watch for gold stars on buildings. It signifies where Jewish families lived during the holocaust.
• Hundertwasser House
Sounds like a fun trip. I’ve been all over Europe, but I’ve spent more time in Vienna than anywhere else.
And Salzberg! If you can fit it into your schedule by all means go to Salzburg for a day or two. If I had the means it would be the place I would choose to live. It has an otherworldly mix of history, culture, and the Alps. The sound of music bus tour is surprisingly awesome.
Thanks for the info. Definitely looking forward to it.
