Benefits of aging

Interesting couple of days - kids are all home for Xmas. I feared a few days with no activity - how wrong!
Saturday, did a swim with daughter - who taught me some interesting drills and gave some great feedback that helped an incredible amount. After drilling for a while, we did some intervals, and she pounded me into a pulp.
This morning, did another swim with daughter - more nasty & productive drills (really helped with feel of the water) with lots of kicking and backstroke etc. Then did a 13mile run with same daughter and with younger son - with whom am doing a half marathon in Feb. They ALSO kicked my ass. So, in two days, have had three great workouts with people I love and with the added benefit of a great chance to talk about all kinds of things. There’s nothing cooler than learning from your kids!!

Merry Xmas to all!

Yes, it’s awesome to have workouts with your kids. I ran a half mary with my 18yo daughter last May and loved the chance to chat during the training runs. Sure learned more about her during those runs than if we were sitting in front of the boob tube!

That’s awesome! It’s great that you are having such a good time. I’m sure that they appreciate you keeping up with them, too. I just have an easy trainer spin on the agenda for my Dad today. I just about did him in with our run yesterday…and brick on Saturday… and I’m going to take him to the pool on Wednesday…

Merry Christmas!

My dad and I used to do a lot of runs together when I was in town. I always enjoyed the quality time with my dad. It was a great way to catch up, solve the worlds problem and get to know my dad better. I’m sure your kids will enjoy the time together with you more than you know.

OK, so here’s the other side of that coin. My ego, what little of it was left, was left in tatters after working with my 12 year old daughter. She was constantly reining in her pace so as not to lose the old man (that’s “old man” with two connotations) and leave him lost on the city streets. I admit I’m pretty slow, but she is pretty fast!

Dusted by a 12 YO!

Happy Holiday to all ST’ers!

Wish I could run with my Dad. Was fun when we could water ski together. Better to be dusted, than nothing at all!!

What a great role model for your children. I run with my Highschool daugther who run XC and Track and I really doubt she would have gone out for it if I wasn’t a runner…

Once you get used it you get proud of it! funny how that works.

It doesn’t get any better than that!

I had a similar experience a few years back when one of my daughters came home for Thanksgiving.

She was a pole vaulter on her college track team and she asked me if I would do a track workout with her. It was neat that she would even think to ask me (I was 51 at the time). We were going to start with 4x200 yds and then do some other stuff. I had never raced her since she was small so this was our first "adult "race.

Well, she beat her old man in the first 200 by about 5 yards ( in high school she went to the state meet three times in the 200 so this was no big surprise). We do the 2nd 200 and I beat her by about 5 yards (she was never big on endurance). She said that she thought maybe she should quit because she felt a cramp coming on. I said, sure, but that was the last dash she would ever do with me because I wanted to always lord it over her that I won our last race! And I have every chance I get.

I would never think to challenge any of my kids in a swimming race. They were poking fun at me yesterday telling their boyfriends how bad I sucked at swimming. “Forced” me to bring up the 200-yard dash story again.

Merry Christmas to all.
