Ben Roethlisberger: Cool or Just Plain Dumb?

Reflecting on my own accident 8 weeks ago in which I was wearing a cycling helmet and was hit and run by some jacka-- that never even bothered to stop and see if I was alive, I was astonished to find out that the Superbowl Champion Steeler’s star quarterback was involved in a car versus motorcycle wreck in which he wasn’t wearing a helmet. Now here we have a guy who must have some form of intelligence as he can run an NFL offense which can be quite complex. So why in the heck did he choose not to wear a helmet as he rode his “crotch rocket” thru the streets of Pittsburgh? After seeing his defiant interview about 1 year ago in which he said that he chose not to wear one because it wasn’t the law in Pennsylvania, I tend to have little sympathy for him and think that he is an idiot for making that choice. Maybe I feel this way because I work in an ER and I see other idiots coming in with head trauma from not wearing a motorcycle helmet and being involved in a wreck. He is one of the lucky ones having survived without any apparent neurological or brain injury. He however did require 7 hours of oral/maxillofacial surgery so who knows how bad he’ll be scarred. But one thing is for sure, he sure did look cool on that “crotch rocket” without a helmet on. In his own words from the earlier interview, “not wearing a helmet makes me feel freer.” Maybe he’s not as smart as I thought he was because I think the correct wording should’ve been something like “it makes me feel more free.” Nonetheless, I think his decision to ride a motorcycle without a helmet on is kind of like a heart surgeon deciding to be a street fighter on the side. So who thinks Big Ben is cool and who thinks he is an idiot? And who just doesn’t care?

Stupid and got what he deserved…especially for dissing the helmet idea in the interview.

def. an idiot…what a moron…who would ride a bike that can do 150 with no protection? Is this going to end his upcoming season?

"Is this going to end his upcoming season? "

Sounds like it probably won’t end his upcoming season but I doubt we’ll see his face on the cover of GQ anytime soon.

Dumb.

I won’t ride my bicycle w/o a helmet and this chuckle head gets on his crotch rocket w/o one.

Not only dumb, but stupid. I don’t wish the guy ill will, but if his career is over I won’t feel bad for him.

Now here we have a guy who must have some form of intelligence \\

This is where you have made the wrong assumption. These guys are morons, go look back at the thread where they have the results for NFL players who have been taking the wonderlick test for the past 30 years or so. They averaged somewhere in the teens and low 20’s, and that’s out of 50. The test is for morons, I took it and got them all right, easily, and suppose most here would get at least 90%… It’s what happens when you are a great athlete, coming up through the school system. It appears that there is a fair amount of favoritism in the classroom, and the better you are, the worse it gets. ANd apparently no amount of money thrown at them makes them any smarter…

Also a case of a guy in his 20’s, on top of the world thinking he’s invincible and that nothing bad will happen to him.

Something tells me, though, that this won’t happen again…at least not while he’s in the NFL.

It’s called ‘thinning the herd’.

A radio show I listen to interviewed the X-Games motocross riders last summer and asked them what kind of bikes they ride on the roads. They all replied that they don’t ride on the roads, it’s just too dangerous.

My question is then: Why does he wear a helmet then when he plays football?

OxyMoron is more like it.

***Stupid and got what he deserved…especially for dissing the helmet idea in the interview. ***

I’m not sure I’d say anyone ever deserves something like that… but he certainly tempted fate every time he got on the motorcycle without a helmet. Eventually, the odds will catch up to you in some form or another. He’s just lucky he’s not dead.

I scored perfect on the Wonderlic Test and here I thought I was actually smart this whole time, damn it ;-).

dumb. so few of us have the physical gifts, the opportunity, and the privilege to make such a lucrative living playing a major professional sport. why jeopardize that with reckless and unnecessary risks to those physical skills that you depend on for that kind of lifestyle?

especially stupid are pro athletes that get busted for DWIs. what, they can’t afford a cab ride with the multi-million dollar contract?

My question is then: Why does he wear a helmet then when he plays football?

OxyMoron is more like it.

Because the NFL requires it, although oxymoronic is a pretty apt description.

Those of us on organ transplant lists love to see motorcycle riders without helmets. We call them organ donors.

They don’t tell you who your organs came from after a transplant, but the Dr told my husband mine were from a man in his 20’s (eeww, boy parts). A good chance he was one of those idiots. In a sick way, I guess I should be grateful for “no helmut” laws.

I'm fairly certain that his Wonderlic scores were solid, although I don't remember them off-hand. MU is also a fairly academic, legit school. Since I'm a Browns fan, and Big Ben is from Ohio(Findlay), I consider him to be a mortal enemy.

What's the most absurd about his "I don't wear my helmet" comments, was that they were immediately after Cleveland Browns TE Kellen Winslow, Jr. was lost for the season as a result of a motorcycle injury. So it's not as if motorcycle injures weren't happenening among his peers/division rivals.

Personally, I think anyone who rides a motorcycle without a helmet is a fucktard. Plain and simple. I have worked scenes in whcih folks would still be alive if they would have worn their helmet. The common theme among non-helmet wearers is "I'm gonna die if I wreck anyways, so I might as well not wear one." One of the stupidest thoughts I have ever heard.

My though is, if you're a high-paid pro athlete, you owe it to yourself and your legacy to practice safety and smarts, all year-round. It just makes sense to be able to earn money for the longest possible time. Especially during your short-lived career in pro sports. Most skill-position players will be retired by their mid-30s, if they are lucky. That leaves from you late 30s on to skydive, ride Harleys, snowboard, or perform any other type of high-risk activity that makes coaches/GMs/owners/fans' heart skip beats.

Chalk me up for voting Ben R for just plain dumb. And not becasue I’m a jilted Browns fan, because K2’s an idiot as well.

Anyone who rides a motorcycle (or bicycle for that matter) without a helmet has a head that is harder than the pavement.

Monty - your a bit off base - the test is actually designed so that a score of 20 is intented to show AVERAGE intelligence. Now average means everyone - and i think most people on this board are at least above average in intellegence.

here’s some more information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderlic_Test

Apparently the average Sercurity Guard scores 17 and wierdly enough the Offensive Tackles in the NFL score highest at 26.

I doubt most people on the board with score 45 and above.

Hey, you figure your typical 23 year old knows everything to begin with. Not only that, he’s indestructible. Now pay him $5 million a year (or whatever) to toss a ball around.

Then you expect him to wear a lid when he rides around on a motorcycle that has more horsepower than most cars?

Come on, man!

Or look at it this way: He’s no dumber than the PA legislature, which repealed the state’s helmet law a couple years ago.

ps. try this test for 5 minutes. the questions aren’t hard, but getting them all done in 5 minutes might be…

The Govenator bite it. Now the Super Bowl champion Quarterback. It must be nice to be rich, Young and feel invincible. Funny thing about life, It jumps up and hit you in the teeth. I wonder if he will recognize a second chance.

Probably not!
