I must admit sometimes I do races for the “medal”. I’d love to get a great belt buckle one - like a texas size belt buckle. Leadman looked cool, but the old website keeps redirecting to lifetime fitness (or something like that).
Snake Creek Gap MTB TT in Dalton, GA. Used to be 3x34, but now they changed the format to 2x34 or 2x50. I completed the 3x34 in 2012 and I’m registered for the 2x50 series in January and February.
Do a 100 mile ultra. It is a tradition to give out belt buckles for 100s. Oher race types are just trying to copy that tradition.
And, if I have the history right, the ultra world basically borrowed the practice from the horseworld to begin with. It was the legendary Western States 100 horse race when Gordy Ainsleigh came without a horse and invented ultra running, and finished.

And he received a buckle for running it, so they continued the tradition.
Do it if you get the chance. You definitely feel like you’ve earned your buckle once it’s over. The Pinhoti Trail is awesome, but those last few miles of rock gardens and climbing are brutal after you’re already exhausted. It’s a shame that it’s no longer three events, but at least they added the 50 mile option. I’m surprised 2x34 gets a buckle at all, but it is a different buckle than the 2x50 apparently. They have also added a mobile bridge at the creek crossing that comes about 1-2 miles in on the 34 miler (17-18 miles in on the 50, I assume). Back in my day we had to ride or wade across!
I’ve been meaning to get a belt for my buckle, but never have.
Having only done the first in the series last year:
I’d feel bad using the bridge, even though I @#$^&!! hate being cold and wetI’d feel bad getting a belt buckle for only doing 2x34 (AND using the bridge) I can’t imagine doing 50.
That said, I got a belt buckle two weeks ago at Ragnar TN for doing the “hardest” leg – 10.2 miles and ~1100’ elevation. Will I wear it? Duh.
I was just going to post a link to this race. Might try it this year…coach nixed it last year.
Would 2nd the Snake. Have a couple of buckles and know those trails very well. IMO, it’s not as hard as people make it out to be, but there is definitely some gnarl out there. In separate incidents, it’s put me in the ER, broke a frame, snapped chains, and caused many BB rebuilds (like this past Januray’s complete slop-fest). If you are going to do it, might as well sign up for the 2x50 to get the inaugural medal. Better hurry, those spots are running out.
