BEET JUICE...how can you get it down?

So I’ve hopped on the bandwagon and decided to down some beet juice this week in preparation for a half-iron coming up this weekend. The only problem is…I absolutely HATE it. I’ve tried mixing it with seltzer and lemon juice, chugging it as fast as I can, drinking it through a straw while holding my nose, and drinking it early in the morning before I am awake enough to taste it. In my opinion, it just tastes gross (if you enjoy drinking it then consider yourself lucky!). Does anyone out there have any other ideas for how to make it bearable? Or do I just need to toughen up? Also, for anyone who has been drinking it prior to races, do you notice that it makes a difference? Thanks!

Just wait until a nutrition fad comes along that you like?

=)

can you enlighten me as to what the benefits of doing such a nasty thing would be?

Combine it with other fruits/veggies. Our standard juicing recipe is 2 beats, 1 orange, 1 grapefruit, 1 apple, 3 carrots. Yes you can still taste the beet but overall I think it tastes good.

This usually ends up being around 20-24 ounces total.

For one, it’ll really freak people out when you pee in a cup.

I don’t know if it makes a difference, but it becomes part of my routine for the 3-4 days leading up to an important race, so it helps get me in race-brain.

There is some science on it out there, but there are also reports that debunk that info.

I find it has to be really really cold for me to be able to drink it. I only have it in a little 4 oz juice glass.

When I was still drinking, I found that combining it with a shot of vodka really helped… hahaha Don’t have that option anymore.

Carolyn,

Not specific to beet juice but beets as a dish. I never really enjoyed them until served Cajun style. Lots of salt and hot stuff added suddenly makes them oh so yummy to me… Might be work for the juice too if you like spicy food. It seems to greatly reduce that earthy bouquet or at least enhance it.

YMMV,

Hugh

Good news. You are too late for this to help you now so you can stop

Make sure you avoid the one with pulp. The Biotta brand one has no pulp and is much more doable.

If you DO have the one with the pulp in it, DON"T shake it for heaven’s sake. Leave that pulp at the bottom.

Since I switched to the Biotta one, it is much more humane.

I think this article sums it up:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/fitness/why-elite-athletes-guzzle-beet-juice-before-a-race/article12747831/

I’m sure there are other good/better articles out there, but this is just one that I’ve read recently.

The study I read said that people drank like 1 or 2 cups of it, three times a day, and that was what had the benefits. I don’t know if less is going to cause statistically significant differences…

That article lost me very quickly when it attributed a quote from a fictional novel (Once a Runner) to a teammate of Frank Shorter in the first paragraph.

How about this instead; beet salad made from the vegetable in question, assisted by crumbled goat cheese or feta, fresh thyme and walnuts, both chopped. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar dressing (olive oil, vinegar, dijon mustard, fresh garlic, honey) and you have a FANTASTIC beet dish!

Cut it 1:1 with pineapple juice.

First time I tried beet root juice everything went well.

2nd time, I got a bad batch. My friend and I each drank 0.5L and for a full hour this happened http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eYSpIz2FjU I kid you not.

I now have switched to http://beetit.com/product/beet-it-stamina-shot-sport/

Is this something you do often?

Nope. I race WTC events.

Hilarious.

Hate to break the bad news to you - but it’s impossible for anyone to successfully drink Beet Juice.
