BB30 vs BBright question

Hi,

I’ve searched the boards and Slowman has provided a very good response to someone on this topic but it doesn’t answer my specific question. I’m hoping someone can…

I have a 2012 Shiv Comp with FSA Gossamer cranks on a BB30 BB. I am getting a new Cervelo R3, which comes with FSA Gossamer on a BBright BB.

My thinking is that I could buy an FSA stages power meter for the left crank on the Cervelo. During the off-season I’d use the power meter on the Cervelo, then swap that left crank arm onto the Shiv during tri season. However, someone has told me that BB30 and BBright are slightly different and the cranks won’t be interchangeable.

Can anyone explain why this is and if my plan above is at all possible?

Many thanks.

if my memory serves me correctly, a BB Bright compatible crank has a longer spindle than a “true” BB30 crank. For example, BB30 Quarqs and Rotor 3D+ cranks are BB Bright compatable due to a longer spindle compared to a Sram Red BB30 crank, which is a true BB30 with a shorter spindle. For the Rotor and Quarq BB30 cranks, they will also fit into a BB30 frame with spacers that are provide and into a BB Bright frame with a smaller set of spacers. There is a good write-up on here regarding the different BB standards and you can see the wider frame set-up with a BB Bright frame. Both BB30 and BB Bright cranks have a 30mm wide spindle so they will fit into the BB of each interface- its just the spindle length that gets to be the issue.

You might want to check to see if your Gossomer that is on your Shiv is a BB Bright compatible crank. Look to see if there are any spacers on the drive or non-drive side of the crank. Also, if you will be running Gossomer’s on both bikes and the non-drive side arm is the non-spindle arm on both the Stages should work on either crank since they are both 30mm wide.

hope this helps.

Your question simply is whether or not you can take the same size Gossamer crank Stages meter from one bike to the other? Absolutely. I do that today with my Cervelo S5 using an Ultegra 6800 crank retrofitted with the Wheels Manufacturing adapter and my Scott Plasma with non BBright bottom bracket. Stages moves easily from one to the other.

FWIW, the only thing you need to worry about is the crank arm length.

Enjoy!

Awesome, sounds like I just need an adapter.

Thanks for your responses.

Actually, you shouldn’t need any adapters at all. You already have a matching FSA crank on both bikes, you’re all set. As long as they are the same and most importantly, the same crank arm length, you’re in business.

I needed an adapter because Shimano does not make the Ultegra 6800 in the BBright size.

Hi GAIJIN,

The two cranks are not the same. FSA’s Gossamer arm for BB30 (and the Stages arm based on it) has 11 mm more offset. That’s because a BB30 shell is only 68 mm wide; a BBright shell is 11 mm wider (79 mm), which makes oversized frame tubes possible - makes a BBright frame both stiffer and lighter.

If you follow your plan, then when the Stages arm is on your Cervelo, it will put your left pedal 11 mm farther to the left.

Maybe consider a Powertap wheel to share between your two bikes?

Cheers,
