Baxter's nerve entrapment / need doc suggestion in OH

Had a Mri and went to a podiatrist/surgeon. He think it is Baxter’s nerve. I also think it is from everything I have been reading. He said the true way to determine if that is the case is an EMG. He wants me to continue NAISDs along with some topical for 4 weeks. Already had cortisone 2 weeks ago. If it would come down to surgery he does not do this type and after reading about it I would like to find the best doctor to help me if needed. I’m in Northeast OH and wandering if anyone can suggest a doc for this issue? Is there Any specific treatment that helped you out? I’m not running and haven’t for several weeks. Since the cortisone it has seemed to have gotten better, but I still get nerve pain/sizzling sensations so I’m really worried. He said it was okay to bike, but I’m leary on that. The docs and PTs say my gait looks good and arches look fine. I have been doing foot exercises for awhile now. I’m all ears if anyone can help.

ITs similar to plantar fasciitis…and ofen mistaken for it. You can bike if it doesnt hurt, and swim to. That was the only thing that kept me sane when I had BNE. Had to wear CROCS since they were the only shoes that didnt irritate it. Was awesome :frowning:

ANyways, still have pains if wear certain shoes so I dont wear them. PM me if you have more questions…

try Dr Nick Campitelli in Akron. Had good experiences with him, he’s a marathoner himself, and I know he treated some guy named Ryan Hall as well

I do Baxter’s release surgery. I do NOT find an EMG helpful, even when discussed with my PM&R colleagues who do a lot of these. Fine for tarsal tunnel syndrome, but a lot of false negatives with this very small nerve entrapment trying to get a need into the abductor digiti minimi muscle.

NE Ohio, probably suggest Dr. Mark Berkowtiz at least for an opinion regarding the surgery. He runs the Foot & Ankle fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic (though I don’t know for sure if he does do this).

Best of luck.

funny you say this. I would have went to him, but he moved his practice and I couldn’t find him at first. I had an appt with this doc instead, but it sounds like I may have to schedule with him

What state do you have your practice in?

Can you tell me what the success rate is if I ended up having to do the surgery in the long run? Is there any paticular treatments that you would say have helped your patients in the past? I told the doc I had been using inserts, wearing a boot at night and doing some graston and ART w chiro treatments. he didn’t think the inserts and boot would be any help.

Dr Berkowitz came up in our discussion yesterday as well, however he wasn’t sure if he did that type of procedure. Thanks for the info by the way

I just happen to be in OH also, but down in Cincinnati area.

I agree that a boot/orthotics are probably not going to help any.

Success rate is good after, but all surgeons are likely to say this since a “failure” isn’t likely to be seen after.
Very little literature on the success rates after release, however, you aren’t any worse if the surgery “fails”, just still have heel pain.

Best of luck!
