Basic q's of logistics for ironman--tents?

i assumed that an ironman had a transition area and that’s it. but there seems to be tents?

what is the purpose of the tents; and is it mandatory to go into one?

also, i do not understand how special needs bags are set up. can someone tell me? and, are the bags in the sun all day?

lastly, at aid stations on the bike–are the bottles handed off, or is it a “stop and refill” type of set up?

a friend of mine is saying she’ll change out of a speedo and into cycling gear, and then into run gear. she changes her entire outfit 3 times. i was considering changing into cycling jersey and into run top in transition–but not stripping down like my friend. how does a person manage to change like that during IM?

thanks for any explanations…yes, i’m IM newbie.

I did not change in the tent for T1, even though many do. I changed in the T2 tent so I got rid of the
bike shorts, and put on run shorts.

So, tents are there for folks to change what ever they want to do with a little privacy.

Two special needs bags. So, when I was about 55 miles, they got my number, and had my special needs
bag ready at mile 56. In the run, they got my number at about mile 12, and had my special needs bag
ready at mile 13.

I saw bottles being a hand off at aid stations.

i assumed that an ironman had a transition area and that’s it. but there seems to be tents? → There is a tent for each gender. The tent has helpers, usually older women, who will assist with anything you ask.

what is the purpose of the tents; and is it mandatory to go into one? → Usually, yes. You grab your bag which has your helmet and shoes and run into the tent.

also, i do not understand how special needs bags are set up. can someone tell me? and, are the bags in the sun all day? → In the sun. Hot. Stuff melts. Fudgee-os aren’t so good. :frowning:

lastly, at aid stations on the bike–are the bottles handed off, or is it a “stop and refill” type of set up? → handed off. Usually water with no top, then gatorade and then water with top. All bottles will fit in your cages. You toss your old bottles and get new ones.

a friend of mine is saying she’ll change out of a speedo and into cycling gear, and then into run gear. she changes her entire outfit 3 times. i was considering changing into cycling jersey and into run top in transition–but not stripping down like my friend. how does a person manage to change like that during IM? → You might feel better changing after the bike. I did that in my first IM because I was so sick of my shorts at that point. There is no harm in putting a pair of loose running shorts in your T2 bag. I didn’t plan on using mine when I started the race, but was very thankful to put them on.

wow-so they know you’re coming and hand off your special needs bag? that is pretty cool.

as for tents, i understand that is for changing. it is appropriate then to by pass the tents if one is not changing…

very good; thanks!

oh, so helmet and shoes are racked in a bag, or do i have to put them in a bag and put them by my bike?

sorry for these basic questions!

"it is appropriate then to by pass the tents if one is not changing… " → It really depends on the layout of transition. If you put on your helmet and shoes in the tent, you won’t be getting in someone else’s way. Think of it as being polite to the other people out there. I think that they would prefer everyone to go through the tents and it tends to streamline things.

"so helmet and shoes are racked in a bag, or do i have to put them in a bag and put them by my bike? " **–> Everything you need to ride, that isn’t physically attached to your bike, will be in your T1 bag. Everything you need to run will be in your T2 bag. **

Now that I think about this, this will depend on whether the T1 and T2 are the same place. In my race they were not.
So, T1 had my bike stuff. But, I got my T2 bag when I came in which had my run clothes, shoes, etc.
Seems like with T1 and T2 being the same, it would be just like a regular tri. Just you have special needs bag they give
you at the half way point of the bike and run.

Dave

All your gear will be turned in on Saturday in your bike or run bag. That includes helmet, shoes, running shoes, etc. You do have access to these race morning, so I guess you could stuff it all in there then, but you have to turn in your gear bags on Saturday. Nothing can be on the bike (no shoes, no helmets sitting on handlebars, but you can have your aero bottle on there).

Oh, and don’t expect to get your special needs bags back after the race.

wow-so they know you’re coming and hand off your special needs bag? that is pretty cool.

as for tents, i understand that is for changing. it is appropriate then to by pass the tents if one is not changing…

very good; thanks!
I tried to bypass the tents in my only IM because I was not changing and they wouldnt let me, they forced me to run back and through the tent - so I would plan on going through.

Have a wonderful first IM!

RR

yes, i want to be polite! i hate being in the way.

so, with gear in the tent, how do they get the gear bag to you? or is just sitting somewhere?

i’m just trying to visualize how this works…

from what it seems one runs out of the tent with all gear on, then goes to bike and simply gets the bike and runs out of transition. then bring the bike back, go into the tent to transition again.

thanks for answering everybody! it’s helpful

First of all, to make you feel better, IMNA used to give athletes packets that explains all this and in the past couple of years the communication of these details is really lacking. I had volunteered & cheered at a few IMs before racing, so I understood everything. I think if you’ve never seen it, it would be very difficult to get all the details you need from the web site. Good for you for asking.

Unlike a regular tri, your bike is racked but nothing else is put with your bike. Everything you would normally have sitting around your transition spot is put into 2 bags labeled either t1 or t2. They give you the bags at registration and it’s up to you to put the right stuff in: helmet and bike shoes for T1; running shoes for T2. You usually are required to use the tents (which at Madison is a ballroom) because you will also put your swim stuff into the bag that you take your bike stuff out of. Then put your bike stuff into the bag you take your run stuff out of. Because you have privacy you are able to do a full change, but only if you want to.

For the aid stations & special needs… The aid station volunteers will pass you beverages, gu, etc. on the fly. You can always pull over (be careful to be out of the way) if you want to use a porta potty or manually refill something. In addition to the regular aid stations you have the option of putting things in one of 2 special needs bags (one for the bike, one for the run). These are at approximately half-way point of each leg. You don’t have to use the special needs bags options at all, or you can put some just-in-case items in there (tubes, co2) and skip it if you don’t need it.

Good luck!

thanks for all of this explanation; it is helping me to visualize what to do!

so, i understand the bags now; it seems they’ve got this down to a science.

after running in from the swim, how do i get retrieve my bags in the ballroom?
are they racked somewhere, or do i just put them down somewhere and hope they won’t get moved?

i would imagine this to be very busy area…i’m concerned my stuff will be misplaced, or someone else will accidentally get it.

lastly, for my special needs bags–who do i give those to before the race, to ensure they will actually be at the special needs point?

IMCdA in 2005 - the bags were out, in numerical order, like this:
http://members.shaw.ca/jannag/index_files/image014.jpg
IMc 2006 was similar.

I just did IMCDA and I had all these question prior to the race - when you get to the race site you will see how organized it is!

When you exit the swim you will go to the wetsuit strippers and just to the side will be everyones gear bags laying in order by number on the ground. You can either have someone find your bag (slow) or run over and grab your bag and then run into the tent (the bags are usually next to the change tents). You change and a great volunteer will gather all your stuff put it back in your bag and put it it away for you.

You will then leave the tent - get sun screen and run/walk to your bike and off you go.

When you return from your bike you will grab your T2 bag which is also laid out in a different area (usually close to the bike exit) and then run to the same change tent. Again a wonderful volunteer will gather all your bike stuff and rebag it.

Again more sunscreen (which having people rub sunscreen on you at this time is like heaven) and you are off!

When you get there and you start racing all your fears will melt away! Good luck! Enjoy the day!

wow; that is alot of bags! thanks for the pic!

i will convince myself not to worry that someone will grab my bag instead of their own.

Some events will have pegs and the bags will be on there under the number.

If you just left bags lying around then Transition would take longer than the swim.

Also sometimes the Special Needs bags are hard to get back. I’d try and avoid one if you can and not put anything in there I didnt mind losing. You have aid stations and you can grab stuff at t1 and t2 anyway.

Kitty,

Here is what happened at IMFL.

On the day before the race, you are to check-in your bike in the bike corral. You bike must have the bike sticker (most people just affix the sticker to your stem). The sticker will come in your race packet pick-up bag. There will be a sheet of stickers (1 sticker for your bike, 1 sticker for your helmet, 1 sticker for your T1 bag, 1 sticker for your T2 bag, 1 sticker for your Bike Special Needs bag & 1 sticker for your Run Special Needs bag). On this day also, u will have to bring your T1 & T2 bags also, and they volunteers will show you where to put your T1 & T2 bags You will get the T1, T2, BSN & RSN bags in your race packet. In your T1 & T2 bags, u will put in the necessary stuff that u will need to start each leg of the race. For example, helmet, bike shoes, glasses, socks, jersey, etc… in T1 bag. For T2, u will put in your run shoes, clean socks, running hat, etc… Only pro’s are allowed to have their shoes affixed to their bikes. Most people also let out a little air from their tires and top it off in the morning of the race.

On race day, u will bring your Special Needs bags with you to the race site. They will normally tell you where to drop it off. Don’t worry, most times, your SN bags makes it out to the SN area. U will also have access to your T1 & T2 bags. Usually people revisit these bags just so that they know for sure that the bags are where they left it and positioned such a manner that the number is visible so that u can identify the bags when u come out of the water.

When u get out of the water, u will pass through the wetsuit strippers, then pass thru a shower (usually some hose appendage hanging from a framework) and then make your way thru the rows of T1 bags. Grab your bag or shout your number out when u approach ahd a volunteer will help u locate your bag. Grab your bag and head into the T1 tent. Empty out your T1 bag, put your wetsuit, goggles and swim cap in there. Put your bike attire/stuff on and drop your T1 bag in a designated pile. You will get your stuff from your T1 bag back after the race. Head over to your bike, grab it and off you go.

When u return after your bike, hand off your bike to the volunteer (this is the best part, it makes u feel like a pro not having to re-rack up your bike). Shout your number out again and someone will help u look for your T2 bag. Head over to T2 tent, empty out your T2 bag and stuff your bike stuff in there. Put your run shoes on and off u go.

Special needs…
Upon approaching the Special Needs area, MAKE SURE U SHOUT OUT YOUR NUMBER. They will hand your bag to u just like u see in the TdF with someone standing on the side of the road handing off the feed bags. MAKE SURE U CHECK YOUR BAG NUMBER BEFORE RIDING OFF TOO FAR. There have been times where people get the wrong bags. U don’t want to have someone elses bag full of KFC chicken drumsticks.

On the Run, same thing applies, shout your number out also…

Aid stations on the bike… Usually, the water is set up before the Gatorade (please check though). As one poster mentioned, ALL BOTTLES WILL FIT into your bike cage. IMFL had the waterbottles with a pop-up top on it, so the bottle could be closed whilst not drinking. Bottles will be handed off by volunteers standing on the side of the road.

Yes, bags will be in the sun all day… sometimes u may never get your SN bags back, so don’t put anything valuable in there…

IMNA used to give athletes packets that explains all this and in the past couple of years the communication of these details is really lacking.<<

Actually all of this information is still very readily available, downloaded from the athletes’ guide as a pdf on the appropriate race website.

Go here http://www.ironmanusa.com/, then to 2007 ATHLETE GUIDE. It will basically be exactly the same for every NAS race.

Hey Kittycat - good questions for a newbie!! I wish I had known a bit more before my 1st Ironman!

When you register, you will get 4 or 5 plastic bags - Swim to Bike (T-1), Bike to Run (T-2), special need Bike, special needs Run, and maybe a dry clothes bag - I really can’t remember. When you get your registration packet, you will have a bunch of extra stickers with your race number - put one on EVERY bag - that is how they know who you are and what bag is yours!

When you get out of the swim, they read your race number off your arm (or you tell a lovely volunteer), they call it out, and someone will help get your bag for you - then to the tent where the nice volunteers will help lay your stuff out, help you change, put your swim gear into that bag so it doesn’t get lost and then they will put it back in the appropriate place so you can get it at the end of the day (usually the exact same place it was before the race). Sometime volunteers will get your bike for you - sometimes you have to get your bike, depends on the race.

Special needs for the bike is about 1/2 way (a few miles either way is not unusual), Volunteers will hand you your bag (they have spotters calling out your number) you will probably end up stopping to grab this, take out what you need, leave the rest behind and get going for the 2nd half of the bike.

T-2, hand your bike off to a volunteer, they will re-rack it. Again, the volunteers will help you get your bag by your race number, to the tent, off with the bike shoes, helmet, etc. On with the run stuff, they will help put all your bike stuff back in your T-2 bag and they will re-rack it (hang it up, put it in numerical order somewhere so you can find it after the race). Out of the tent, they’ll even put sunscreen on you if you want, and on to the run.

Special needs, about 1/2 way through the run, volunteers call out your number, they’ll get you your bag, get what you need if anything, leave the bag. Run like the wind to the finish line!

At the end of the night - your T-1 and T-2 bags should be where you put then the Saturday before - the volunteers line them back up - you definitely want to go back and get these.

Special needs bags are usually placed in cardboard boxes labeled with specific race numbers (one for bike, one for run) so they can be easily transported to the appropriate place on the bike and run course - they say you will not get these back, but both races I’ve done the next morning the boxes have been near the transition area and the bags are usually in the correct box - people scavenge the special needs bags and take what they want, whether it is theirs or not - you may get your stuff back, you may not, so don’t put anything in there you don’t want to lose just in case!

As you are running and biking by the aid stations - you can get what you need on the fly or stop, that is up to you. They are prepared to hand over stuff on the fly - just slow down and watch out for sudden stops in front of you!

In the tents, they have the boys tent and a girls tent so you can strip naked if you want to - some people change at every transition, some never change anything but their shoes, but the tent lets you chose what you want to do. And they only have female volunteers in ladies tent and male volunteers in the men’s tent so you don’t have to worry.

Your T-1 and T-2 bags need to be taken to the transition area on Saturday before the race (when you check in your bike too). You will have access to your bike and your T-1 and T-2 bags before the race on Sunday morning if you need to add something to either and to pump up your tires. You can also add drink bottles to your bike in the am so they don’t sit out on Saturday and all night. You drop your special needs bags off the morning of the race.

It will all make a lot more sense when you see how it’s laid out!!
