Seriously tho. I was in Afghan couple rotations ago with a Austrian SOF contingent and met a fellow at the fire pit on THU cigar nights (no homo) Sounds cliche but dudes name was Hans. He was a SF 18D medic. Tremendous guy. Hans was born and raised Catholic but in his words “had reverted to the old Gods.” Many a discussion over good cigars about God, Valhalla and Oden. As Hans related it–it was not a popular vocation to be in the military let alone special forces in Austria; and that his Viking hobby was extremely frowned upon. But each year he’d go to Daneland, or Sweden or Norway for festivals to do: ax throwing, poetry, feats of strength and other viking shit.
Hans helped me greatly with my Afghan tattoo choice. It’s a Norse half sleeve in Ringerike style.

This is getting rave reviews from my friends. Apparently the costuming is pretty accurate.

We watched the first episode last night. The story has great potential. But the acting and dialog seems overly simplified, I can’t quite put my finger on it. Something’s off. The costumes, the scenery, all that is realistic, but the script and the lines they deliver has me wondering. We are going to watch one or two more tonight and see.
Do you get the screen version where they dubbed English words over the original German? The voice actors ruin it for me. Voice and inflections don’t match the characters. Plus there are subtitles which do not match the words coming out of their mouths.
And yes, the lead lady is quite fetching.
Version we were watching----it just came up on our Netflix que—had germanic actors speaking German and Romans speaking Latin. all with subtitles. Wife is fluent in German and I am haltingly conversant.
*ETA. My wife grew up in Germany so she speaks very well a kind of street/bar room German. Years later I am taking German in grad school (cause you have to take at least one foreign language). We’d push our kids around the neighborhood at night in our ‘twinner’ running stroller and my wife would ‘help’ me with my german vocab. Haha. My professor was horrified with the results! “Who taught you this crappy manner of German speaking?” good times!
I think you can change that setting. I was watching the German series Dark and changed it as the English dubbing was weird. Having the subtitles with actors speaking German was better

I took the posters advice given above about settings. Changed to German voice with English subtitles. It’s like a completely different show. Both wife and I agree it made a world of difference. Excellent and well worth it.

Watched this series this week and definitely give it a thumbs-up. Thought it was really good, but I have no idea on how historically accurate it was.
Seems to set itself up for additional seasons though and not just about the the Battle of Teutoburg Forest we saw in t his one.

Absolutely, we did the same and read the subtitles. It was not bothersome, and pulled us in better.
Reading subtitles takes getting used to in shows. I always give it a few episodes at least and then I don’t notice it much.

Exactly, the effort goes away and your brain starts picking it up without looking down at the bottom of the screen and reading.
How different is this show from vikings or the the last kingdom?
I watched around 15 mins of the show, and my takeaway was “ehhh its seems like a bad “vikings””
the Dan Carlin podcast series, Celtic Holocaust, has some very interesting commentary about the ‘barbarians’, the Rhine, and interactions with the Romans.
