Baker's Cyst/Meniscal Tear

Hi from Scotland!
Hurt the back of my left knee at yoga stretching - a few days later I had a baker’s cyst, no pain. Went to the GP and was told I had a Baker’s Cyst. It is now causing some pain. I’m due to get an Ultrasound. I am worried though that I’ve torn my meniscus. Can anyone tell me what this feels like/what they went through. Or anything related to either of these.

Thanks so much!!

Martin

(PS I’m 26)

I discovered my meniscus was torn while training for Kona this year. Nothing worked to dissipate the pain that would flare up while running, which I feel in the back or inside of the right knee. Dull pain mostly but only because at the first sign of pain I would stop. I tried some Hokas and took them for a one block run and burst a bakers cyst. The pain was excruciating and I barely limped home. I took the next day off from work to let it heal.

So, flash forward to Kona last Saturday. I ran after laying off the running for 3 weeks or so. I don’t know how but I ran as far as mile 10 (with some walking early on). After that the meniscus pain built every bit I walked or tried to run. The pain was EXCRUCIATING. But a picture is worth far more than words. Check out my fjnish line photos from Kona at www.finisherpix.com to see what running with the meniscus tear feels like. I’m athlete 1129.

Now go get an MRI and have arthroscopic surgery so you don’t put yourself through what I just did. I go in next week to see my surgeon.

Good luck,

I was diagnosed with a ruptured bakers cyst & meniscal tear. MRI confirmed it. Surgery done, in and out on the day - walked out of the hospital. I hope to be back running in a 5-6 weeks. Surgeon was matter of fact, without surgery it wasn’t going to get better. Knee kept jamming and locking and I couldn’t run. Surgery was an easy decision, just find a good surgeon.
The cyst occurs for a reason, probably because of another condition, maybe a meniscus tear. Whatever the diagnosis, I hope it clears up quickly for you.

I tore my meniscus doing crossfit, it was pain but not excruciating. Withing 2 days I developed a bakers cyst (pretty clear indication of torn meniscus) - release of synovial fluid and it builds up. I iced, rested and managed for 2 weeks. Clicking up and down stairs, aching at night and often when sitting, could run but was not right and hurt. It felt unstable and “not right” Saw Sports Med Dr and he said 1 week not exercise and cyst did not go down. Set up an MRI and showed medial meniscus tear and cyst Had surgery 1 week later (1 week ago) walked out and am now feeling great, Full ROM, dull ache is on my feet too long Cleared to swim 10 days post op (waiting on incision), 14 days post op begin spinning and elliptical. 5 weeks post op ( with approval from Dr) can start 10min running every other day.

Had both at age 65 (plus plica inflammation in both knees), fixed with surgery, qualified for Boston and done a bunch of Ironman races since, with no problems. The answer, I’m afraid, is a good surgeon, stop doing whatever caused it, and you’ll be back in the game forever.
