Assos will stay there longer and be more effective for a long ride. Assos costs about 10 times the price of BB. It is not 10 times better. But I still use Assos for long rides. I use BB also.
By clean, you mean looking like new??? I’ve used bag balm for over 2 years. Know lots of roadies that use it on a regular basis and swear by it. I agree that it stays in/on your shorts and saddle, but what makes that ‘not clean’? Can the residue carry germs and bacteria? I agree that Assos is better…meaning it isn’t as greasy and I love the tingly (no offense Gary) feeling, but the end results of the two are the same for me and lots of my buddies… which is an uninfected taint. If the end result is the same, and you are on a budget, go for the BB. If you want something ‘cleaner’ and tingly and think those benefits deserve the extra coin, then buy Assos.
Who has a clean chamois that actually rides??? ; )
Haven’t tried the BB yet. So far: assos, chamois butt’r, and udderly smooth
I’ve used both Bag Balm and Udderly Smooth, but now prefer the latter much more. I used to think that Bag Balm had more staying power, but I came to realise that Udderly Smooth does as fine a job, and feels better (not as sticky).
Stick with Assos… petroleum based products, like Vaseline, are not water-soluble and thus harder to get off.
Do IM racers put that stuff on before the swim, or in T1? If it is water soluble, I assume it all washes out during the swim. Are racers running out of the change tent with their hand down their shorts rubbing in some gunk before their ride? Well, you know what I mean.
I have used Bag Balm and Udderly Smooth, and still use them both. Bag Balm=staying power, kind of sticky. Udderly Smooth=less sticky, easy to wash off.
I’m going to call it a draw and say personal preference.
