Bad crash...broken clavicle.....season over!

Was training to go sub 11 at Vineman. All indicators looking good. Yesterday, was riding 110 miles. At mile 65, on a downhill at 35 mph hit a bad dip next to a new man-hole. Crashed hard, cracked my helmet, severe rash along the left side, and broke my left clavicle. Have an appointment with an ortho on Friday. The ER doctor did say that the break is pretty bad and that the bone is splintered a little. It is in sling now but the area where the clavicle is, is very swollen.

My season is over. But am ok with it. My guardian angel was with me.

My question is to anyone who has had a broken clavicle. What can I expect, or start doing now? What will the re-hab consist off? How long will it take to heal? When will I be able to swim, bike, and run (just for fitness training)?

Am going to go retrieve my bike from a maintenance depot in Searchlight, NV today. Am also going to bring a can of red spray paint with to mark that spot. Maybe I can prevent this from happening to someone else.

Everyone, ride safe. I was down in the blink of an eye. My first “real crash.”

Conrad

Sorry to hear that.

July is a very popular month for these types of accidents because training and fatigue are at their highest.

I broke my clavical abd seperated my sholder. My advice is DONT DO ANYTHING!!! LET IT HEAL!!!

I did yardwork and chores and just made mine worse. If you want to come back soon. Do nothing. Relax. Take walks with your SO as exercise. Enjoy the downtime. You will get fitness back.

well…I broke my clavicle in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. Did they x-ray you holding a bag of sand? That’s right up there in my most painful moments list. As you are probably aware…there not much they can do for this other than sling it and wait for it to repair itself. I was getting back into the swing in about 8 or 9 weeks. This was 5 years ago but I remember having the rubber tubing stretched from the door knob excercises for strength and range of motion. Mostly it was rest. Bummer dude…glad you are ok otherwise.

Hang in there brother. I ruptured my achilles last year and I am on the comeback trail now. Just one day at a time let it heal and see if there is some physical therapy they can set you up with after it heals. It is boring and painful, but I attribute my PT with me being back so soon. I went back to work full duty 5.5mos after the injury.

Again, like another posted, let it heal, mine was great right after, stopped wearing the sling i was working the arm trying to keep everything moving, three weeks after i rolled onto it sleeping and rebroke it,never had pain before after rolling on it it hurt everyday for six months. I went to a different DR( the first Dr said three weeks your all healed) and was told to wear the sling and keep it on for another six weeks. I got real depressed and gave up cycling and gained a bunch of weight, but after a few weeks got my head on right and started riding again but still have some of the weight four years later. Let it heal and good luck. Randall

Glad it wasn’t more serious. Amazing what those helmets will do for ya.
Broke clavicle 3 yrs ago during an “easy” mountain bike ride. Bought a recliner so I could sleep - became my bed for about 6 weeks. Had a pretty bad break and kept a figure 8 brace on for 4-6 weeks. At 8 wks was on the trainer, about the same time I could run and at the 12 wk mark started swimming again. Don’t push it. In some cases they can go in and surgically put a plate and screws, but not better results than just letting it heal.

Slowman had one a couple of years ago and gave a blow by blow on Slowtwitch. May want to do an archive search.

The one good thing about it is that it cured the shoulder impingment I was having from swimming. Not what I would recommend. Only broken bone I’ve ever had and have been told by docs that it and a sternum fracture are the absolute most painful.

Conrad,

So sorry to hear this! Heal quickly.

Good info larry, and everyone else too.

Been putting in very heavy training volume. I can’t just stop and become a couch potato. To just come to a complete cessation of all physical activity would just kill me. Hope to be able to start walking in a couple days.

Hopefully I can get close to your recovery timetable. That would not be too bad. Again, my season is over. I just want to recover to be able to just do basic fitness training.

For as for most, January 1st (actually for me the first monday of the new year) is the beginning of Base. That’s my athletic goal now.

thanks again,

Conrad

Maybe a stationary recumbant bike!? Heal up and glad to hear all things considering you’re ok!!

Don’t get too down! I broke my collarbone 2 months before my first IM. Spent the first week just walking for exercise, then the rest of the first month biking upright on the trainer with arm in sling and taking long, fast walks. Worked in the biking and running gradually over the next month, got in the pool to test things out the week before the race, and everything went fine. So go easy, but there are plenty of things you can do to stay in shape–and you don’t necessarily have to write off your season. There are plenty of fall races to choose from!

That sucks Conrad, absolutely sucks. But I’m confused. Why can’t you ride indoors on the trainer? Just get a seat pad and sit straight up and pedal at low RPM. Am I missing something? Or is even the slightest upper body motion too painful?

I hope you get back on track as soon as you can! I’m with you, completely stopping physical activity would make me go crazy!

Just an update. X-ray shows a good break. You can actually feel the “bump” where the broken clavicle is angled up. Tomorrow I see the Ortho.

It is amazing how sore my legs are! It feels like I just did that IM a couple days ago. Have been changing the dressings on a daily basis. I will be “decorated” quite well for the rest of my life because of the road rash. The worst is the left shoulder, then left forearm, then left knee and calf. Was a good thing my legs were shaven after all.

Leaving soon to go get my QR Kilo. Not that I will be riding it anytime soon. Curious as to any damage it sustained.

Am going to do my first walk later today. I have a Forerunner 201 GPS that I will use to track my walking miles, just for fun. It will be awhile but eventually will put my Nishiki on the indoor trainer. Hopefully in a few months I can do some easy swimming. Maybe just kick sets to start with.

Am afraid I will loose my body composition. Last 5 years, raced at around 180/10%. This year was going to be my breakthrough year. Been 166/6% all year and performing the best ever. Placing top 10% in all Olympic races whereas the previous year, around 20%.

Was on target for the Vineman.

Am okay with it all. At least I have been given another chance. Others have not been so lucky.

Conrad

Man can I echo comments. I broke my collar bone at the half vineman last year. Also rid and bad concussion plus the road rash. Nice folks at the Santa Rosa emergency room. (I thought I heard a gal next to me talk about having to get her nipple moved after a breast job. Now, I was not fully there, but I still wonder what the doc and she were doing. )

I know exactly the feeling about do not want to lose the shape you are in. So, I thought I would do water running to stay in shape. I slipped getting in and grabbed with my bad arm. Bad mistake. I tried to ride my bike trainer but was just too painful. My doctor then gave me a REAL bad time and told me to do NOTHING!!! So, I took short walks with the boss. The thing that saved me is I was able to quickly start doing Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) with my wife again. This allowed me to keep up the fitness and enjoy spending time with the wife. It took a month before I could brush my teeth correctly with my right hand.

So bottom line, is if you do not rest it, you will pay the price. I still, and always will, have the big bump where the bones healed no longer level. I was able to do my first tri race 10 weeks after the accident. My arm would hurt real real bad after runs. It has been just about a year, and getting better, but I assume will never be the same.

Dave

Sorry to hear that…

My husband broke his last Nov and did no rehab, except he made sure he didn’t feel sorry for himself. He was running after 6 weeks and back on a new bike (That helped too) shortly there after. And we can’t figure it out but he is swimming better than ever.

Stay positive

Unwittingly, seem to be doing now just what you did!

Thinking I might be able to toe the line. Will be 7 1/2 weeks from my crash to the race.

Was encouraged at day 10 when the ortho did his first follow-up x-ray. He kept saying it was “amazing.” Although the gap looked pretty grim to me, he said it it was filling in and that my bones were extremely firm as he pushed on them, with no pain. So, apparently, I may heal quicker than normal.

This week, week 3, will have around 20 hours training. 12.5 hours on the trainer (watching the Tour) and 30 miles power walking. This coming week, am going up to the mountains and will put in 8-10 miles a day at altitude and grades. I have tried jogging a little. Hurts the break so won’t do it for a while. Just wanted to test out the legs. They want to run!!! So I know I will be ok there.

Am worried about the swim. Although I have improved greatly in that discipline, will be lucky to get a week or maybe two in, just before the race. Instead of swimming a 1:03:00 goal split, I would gladly take 1:10:00.

Still have some bad rash so can’t do any kick sets yet. Plus a bump right on the tochanter where I fell on the left hip. Giving that lots of ice. I think it is called trochanteric bursitis.

Have my next x-ray June 22nd, 4 1/2 weeks after the crash. That will tell all. Hope to see significant calcification. I know it is getting better because I can lift my arm higher with each day. Can also use it a little on the trainer.

Does this sound like what you did and how you healed.

thanks,

Conrad

Conrad,

Where on the road did it happen? Which direction? Once I get MY broken left collar bone mended, I need to do that ride. It’s a good ride, and want to do it this fall when it’s cooler. You know - 95 degrees!

Hope you heal well. Are you thinking about doing Silverman?

Jason

sorry about that man and it’s ok to be pissed off. i hope the rehab goes well. this puts my stolen bike in perspective. listen to the ortho and pt and you’ll be good.

Hey Jason,

I crashed on the descent just after you cross the summit north of Searchlight, NV on US 95. There are two manhole covers right in the middle of the shoulder, about 1/2 mile after starting the descent. The first is easy to go around, everything is smooth. The second is what got me. It is right smack dab in the middle. You don’t want to go left because of the deep rumble strip. Normally, you don’t want to go over the manhole cover or the concrete collar so went to the right and stayed on the asphalt. There is where it is. It is a deep depression where the ashpalt has sunk down in the year since they paved that section. To make it worse, there is a small rise right before it dips. It is for all intents and purposes, an invisible pothole. The last speed my forerunner showed was 33.7 mph. I was on the aerobars when I hit it.

All I can remember is all of a sudden coming off the bars with me going left and the bike to the right. I think I still was clipped in when I impacted about 30 meters down the road from that “hole.”

Three weeks before I crashed, was riding the same route (was my first time this year on the new road coming back out of Searchlight) when I hit that hole. Again, was on the bars at high speed. Almost lost it there. It was the same day that Dick Tomlin died. When I read the article on his death, noted the time of his accident then looked at where I was at that moment. It was almost to the minute, when he died and I almost crashed. About three weeks later I did. So when I crashed, I was looking. But it is almost invisible. I should not have been on my drops.

Tried to have the Nev. DOT fix the hole. No luck. In fact, when I made telephone contact with the DOT maintenance supervisor in Searchlight, I mentioned to him the hazard and that it should be marked. He said, that is not allowed. After, I picked up my bike the next day, I didn’t say anything about that dip. I knew his attitude. Me and my buddy stopped where I crashed and that is when I was able to really study the issue. So I took out a can of red paint and marked it. Guess who then showed up? Mr. Bureaucrat. We sort of got into it then. He started saying it was against regulations and they can’t have bicyclists marking the road all over the place. I responded by telling him that this hole is the only bike hazard between Searchlight and Boulder City, that’s around 50 miles each way and further, what good are regulations when the next guy isn’t as lucky as me. This was two days after I crashed. I’m in a sling with gauze covering most of my left side. The fool just absolutely could not see what my motive was. Of course, he was silent after that and left. Two days later, a training buddy rode that route. By then, the supervisor had came back and with black paint, completely camouflaged my warning. That is what pissed me off for days. Not my misfortune, but this calous disregard to saftey.

As for Silverman, that is too late in the year for me. Plus I have some career obligations that I must attend to that will not alow me much training time.

So, the chips are down right now, but I seem to be healing quickly. If I can toe the line in august, I will. But only if I can get the bone to fuse together.

Conrad

PS The corect line is across the concrete collar, either left or right. DO NOT ride right of the collar on the asphalt!!!

Jason,

where did you break your collarbone? How has it been healing?

Mine was comminuted and slightly displaced and somewhat angular. At least it was sort of in the middle. Will be three weeks this Tuesday.

good luck too,

Conrad
