Duathlon this past weekend. May have pushed it too hard as I have pain on the backside of my knee. 5 days later and I still cant straighten my leg and am walking with a bit of a limp. Felt fine during race…no pops or pulls. Whats back there? Yet another “itis” of some kind? Also, I forgot to mention it is tender to touch on what I think is the bicep femoris tendon…about 1-2 inches from kneecap midline. Couple things going on maybe.?
Sorry to hear about your pain. Any swelling, injury, previous problems, why won’t it straighten out, etc.? The way I look at a knee, from the front, 1.5" from the mid line of the knee cap as you describe seems to be still in front. Maybe you could re-word that.
OK, no swelling or previous injury. Felt fine during the duathlon. Woke up the next morning and…shit…I’m limping and I cant bend my knee more than 45 deg without pain. Thats what I meant about it wont straighten out. Pain is posterior for sure. 2 things going on i think. One is right in the middle where the calf meets the hami ( Im not sure about the A &P of the area but thats the best i can describe it). This is what is making me limp. Better today than the last 4 days.
2nd problem is more lateral but still posterior. Maybe 2.5 inches from midline if it helps. I think its my bicep femoralis tendon yelling at me but I cant be sure. As I am going into day 5 post race…this is the main pain. Any way you look at it i have never had pain posterior…race 3 weeks away…cant run…ect… O ya, my coach tells me it is a minor issue, I should learn the difference between minor issues and major issues and basically man up. Did i say i was LIMPING! Maybe minor but WTF! Sorry about that rant, he may no longer be my coach.
Nothing pathological comes to mind that would require significant intervention. Frequently, a meniscus (knee cartilage) tear will give pain in the back of the knee but you lack the traumatic history. Doesn’t sound like infection, etc. Some people get what’s called a Baker’s cyst but it’s usually a secondary lesion to something else going on inside the knee. Any chance it’s at all better and that you can just wait it out?
Hey Doc. Its about 75% better. No more limping, bicep fem tendon is still a bit tender. Its frustrating, I go out hard for the first race of the year and bam… miss 2 weeks of running. Anyway, I will try a short run Wed and see how it feels. If it fires up, I will try again friday.
So the pain is still there 3weeks later so i went to my ortho sports doc and he diagnosed popliteus tendinitis. He said it is not very common and not serious and to not run until it doesnt hurt when walking. OK fine…did a 90 min bike this morning and it hurt and now after… it aches like it did when it first started. Could this actually be a bike injury? Anyone deal with this?
Well, whatever the cause i made an appointment with a PT to have a run gait analysis. I also decided to shut it down completely for 2 weeks and re-eval. I may swim but no bike and run. I will miss my first tri of the season next saturday…bummer. All those 4 am rides in the basement all winter for nothing.
I have read before to not even stretch a nagging injury, for awhile anyway… Any truth to this?

You said you can’t straighten your knee. Is this because it hurts? Or does the knee feel blocked? You mentioned popliteus which was my first thought.
I’ve dealt with that injury a little bit. I’ve found ART can help it. Also, usually when you have posterior pain while cycling you saddle is too high. Have you been properly fit on your bike? Any recent changes in saddle position? Maybe take a pic an post it so some people can see your position or just try dropping your saddle half a centimeter.
Good luck. Injuries are a pain in the you know what. I’ve had my share. Hang in there.
I have been fit, been riding the bike since december without issue. I hurt the knee during the Du 3 weeks ago (it started hurting the next day but I am assuming it happened during the run), and the bike keeps agravating it.

X2 on the saddle, had a very similar injury. It lasted quite a while after a half im,all the exact symptoms, dropped my saddle a tad and it did the trick.Good luck with it
