Avoiding swim fin blisters

I’m using the yellow zoomers, and had my first strong kick session in them. Was cruising along, feeling great, enjoying the propulsion, and didn’t notice anything until after in the locker room when the bloody nubs of my toes made my friend gasp in horror.

Long story short: any tips on not having the fins tear your toes to shreds?

FWIW I’ve checked for proper sizing, & don’t feel any pinching or pressure.

I use trislide.

This was a big problem for me so I switched to these fins: http://www.swimoutlet.com/p/aqua-sphere-alpha-fins-5265/?q=1&richrelevance&CategoryTopProducts&item_page.rr2

Since then I’ve been golden.

This.

You should be able to get thin neoprene socks from a surf store as they are used by bodyboarders.

Ok then, and no kidding it’s simple! Guess socks in the pool just seemed weird so it never crossed my mind - duh.

Thanks!

I have used fin socks for years. NOT regular socks, they did not work worth beans. But the fin socks designed to be used under swim fins. Never had an issue since I started wearing them.

Ya, thin running socks work great and as a bonus, if you use a pair of white socks that never comes clean in the wash, within a few hours of soaking in the chlorine, they’ll be super white. So, it’s a win-win, get some laundry done and a kick set done at same time. OTOH, while any type of fins enables you to go faster and enjoy kicking more, they have never done a thing for me in terms of improving my kick. Only thing that has worked is lots and lots and LOTS of old-fashioned, fin-free kicking:)

I’ll be the smartass and tell you to ditch the fins

This was the route I originally planned, and may still use if socks feel weird…

I had some blisters when I first started using fins but not anymore. Either I developed callouses or wore down the offending part of the fins. I was going to try to socks but did not have to. I have used duct tape to prevent blisters, but not in the pool.

How many yards/ meters did you kick?

Fingers crossed they wear down over time, or I get callouses! I’ve used them before, but only for a few laps of drills so this was my first mostly-kick workout. It was a master’s swim session (my first) and we had them on the whole time…let’s see if I remember:
Warmup: 300, stroke of choice, no fins; fins on for the rest
Kick only, no arms then 1 arm drill (100)
Kickboard sprint, 8x25, 30 second intervals (200)Freestyle sprint, 10x25, 1:00 (250)Sprint/easy/sprint, 20 sec rest, 4x75 (300)Kickboard sprint, 8x25, 30 second intervals (200)
(Swear I’m forgetting something else here…)
Cooldown, 300, stroke of choice, fins left onTotal: 1650?, 1350 with fins

I just bought a pair of the Roka Silicon fins for this reason. My Finis Positive Drive Fins are way too firm and the pressure makes my toenails bend under pressure (i have thin nails) which is very uncomfrotable. I’m hoping that proper fins specifically for Free Style in a softer material will fix the issue. If not looks like some socks will!

That sounds like a big jump, especially with the sprinting. I think I limited my use to 600 to 800 yards to start. Sometimes there can be a little ridge or seam from molding plastic things. I would check the fins and sand down any rough spots.

Old thin running or biking socks or ladies’ nylon shoe inserts. I know this goes against the triathlete’s credo: if it’s expensive and new, it must be better.

Maybe. This pair has lasted nearly 5 years. I used Finis lycra ones before and they didn’t last more than 2 years.
