Austin TX knee doctors

Recently moved to Austin, have had a knee that won’t let me run for waaay too long know. Had a doc check it out in houston and said it was just inflamed and needed rest, but months later, no real progress.

Who would be good to see in Austin? Is it reasonable to request an MRI as I suspect a meniscus issue?

I recommend Austin Sports Medicine practice.

I saw Dr. Cunningham when I broke my shoulder. They are all really good for sports related injuries.
I know folks who have seen Dr. Windler and Dr. Breazeale also. Highly recommended.

A great option in Austin is Advanced Rehab http://www.atxrehab.com/ I see AJ (Dr Zelinksi). If you want to check them out i’m pretty sure they will be at the Austin tri packet pick-up and post race near the finish line working.

Knock on wood I haven’t had to use them, but I have heard good things about Dr. Brotzman and Brannon Smoot.

Dr Ted Spears did mine over at Sport Performace Int…he has an MRI machine for knees in his office…full staff to rehabe etc…no problems with it and that was 3 years ago.

I’ll put in a +1 for Austin Sports Med. They are the team physicians for UT athletes, and a bunch of good docs. Dr. Elenz did a super job on my rotator cuff repair, Dr. Windler just fixed my sister’s Achilles tendon, Dr. Breazeale has worked on my sister’s knee, and one of them took care of my nephew’s pitching arm.

Imaging will likely be done for a possible meniscal tear.

We swim with Dr. Breazeale…fast swimmer and super nice guy.

Second Dr. Spears and SPI. Nice place, good people. Several friends have been there too.

Jack -Dr.'s Breazeale, Crawford, Cunningham and Windler are members of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (as am I), an organization for docs with a special interest in arthroscopy and diseases of the joints. A good thing. Looks like they all have satisfied customers and you’d do well with any of them.

x3 for Teddie Spears. Did a scope on my knee in Nov. '07 and I started doing tris in March '08. Great guy and great staff.

I had tendinitis in left knee for close to 2 years…massage, PT, TP massage baller, rest, etc…nothing worked completely. at over 60 thought, well this is it for running, i could cope with knee issues on bike. but had a friend who got prolotherapy for back and a fellow ster got it for his hip, so i got my first round on Aug 3 and i cannot believe how good my knee feels. i live in 3 story townhome and it was a struggle to go up and down those stairs, but now no problemo. i am slated for a second round on sep.8th. not sure if i really need it. not sure how long this will last, but impact was almost immediate after initial 2 day stiffness from treatment.

my biking has really improved and i am back running for short time intervals several times a week…all good.

do your own research, just google prolotherapy. there is a dr. hauser in IL that writes extensively on this subject and has done several IM, i think AZ.

good luck!

I had a bad case of ITBS in February. Tried to gut it out for a month. Went to Advanced Rehab and in less than two weeks it was almost all cleared up. ART hurted like a b!tch.

x2 for Austin Sports Medicine Breazeale and Elenz. Swam with both and Elenz scoped my knee last year for meniscus tear. Great guys and well respected. Good luck

Jack-
Welcome to Austin. I saw a Dr. in SW Austin named Scott Welsh. He specializes in knees, and sports-related injuries.

Instead of going down the path of getting scoped, we tried a series of injections of hyaluronic acid into the knee joint. Problem solved. Obviously we may not have the same knee issues, but Dr. Welsh seems to use surgery only as a last resort. More information on the injections:

Good Luck.
