AUSTIN: Oral Surgeons?

Anyone know/recommend an excellent oral surgeon in Austin with ER affiliations?

or… how is treatment at Brackenridge?

What happened?

not me… i still have all my teeth…

my brother went down at the hotter than hell ride. some of our friends are bringing him back to austin now. i would have been there as well except that i am housesitting this weekend.

Is he OK? My nightmare is to crash and knock my teeth out.

I hope he’s not too banged up…

tell the truth, you ran for 30 min too long and I ripped your teeth out for that.

I go to Dr. Voorhees at Austin Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. (512) 454-6725. I haven’t compared him to other oral surgeons (luckily have had no need for one before now), but my dentist recommended him and I trust my dentist. I recently had a tooth extracted by him and will be going in soon for him to do an implant.
My surgery was the result of a bike accident, and my understanding when I was taken to Brackenridge was they do not do dental work. THey x-rayed my jaw to make sure the jaw wasn’t broken, and they glanced at the teeth as part of that but saw nothing wrong and said they do not do dental. Later that evening part of my tooth cracked off and another one was causing a lot of pain, stuff they did not catch, and again, they said they wouldn’t do anything about it anyway.

Dr. Voorhees did a really good job. I am totally freaked out about teeth stuff and he helped me feel relaxed (well, the laughing gas helped too), and I had no pain or complikcations (so far) from the surgery. The one negative thing about his office is every time i have been there (4) I have had to wait. I get there early, and I have been in the waiting room twice for well over 30 minutes. My first visit, a consultation, x-rays, and getting a mold done of my mouth, kept me there almost three hours total. But I’ve let them know about the issue and they felt really bad and seemed like they would try and work on it. Apparently part of the problem is I woudl go in on Friday afternoons and they are usually busy Fridays so are running behind by the afternoon.

As for ER affiliations i don’t have any info on that one. Good luck to your brother

Thanks… that’s awesome. i knew someone here had to have knocked out a few teeth!

I think I have to take him to Brackenbridge anyway to get some test that they weren’t able to do at the hospital in Witchita Falls b/c the machine was broken. And they didn’t do a CT on his head, either. Apparently he was having a hard time staying away, so I want to get that done first.

well, i am skipping my swim… oops.

Scary, I just got off the phone with a good friend who went down on a metal bridge this morning. 200 stitches in his face and missing a bunch of teeth. They told him it would be a few months before they could repair the teeth so that things could settle.

He was not taking it well. I hope things work out for your brother.

oh my gosh, I am sooo sorry to hear that!! My friend is dating an oral surgeon–his name is Paul and he’s a triathlete with T3. I dont know his last name but I will see her at swim tomorrow morning and I’ll get his info then. Tell him to take care of himself!! Let me know what hospital he’s at and I’ll try to come say “hi”!!

Weird, I just found out my boyfriend’s aunt and uncle were in a pretty bad crash at Hotter’n’Hell. By any chance was your brother’s around mile 50?

One other thing I learned in my tooth experience that I thought I’d pass on…the tooth repair scenario takes way longer than I thought. My first dentist was being really conservative (read: not doing anything) to see if it would go away, as he couldn’t see a crack in my tooth in an x-ray. I finally got fed up and found a new dentist who saw the crack right away. He tried a root canal to fix it, again being conservative by recommending giving it time to see if that solved it. So, I followed the guidelines he gave me (including a second root canal along the way), and ultimately went in when he said to follow up with the conclusion it was not getting better so I’d need to get it extracted (the final option). That was when he mentioned the timeline on the extraction/implant/crown (the choice I made to get the tooth replaced), and it’s many months long. Had I known that I would have been much more proactive in getting it done earlier, rather than prolonging the issue. I thought it was a simple procedure: take out the tooth, put in a fake one. It’s not.

It sounds like your brother’s injuries may be worse than mine if it already looks like he needs an oral surgeon so the issue may be more clear cut, but I know I wish someone had told me up front what I was looking at. Dr. Voorhees has been very forward with my options, but I wish I had known them a long time ago rather than once I started going to him.

hey meg… they decided to admit him once they got the scans back on his jaw. the oral surgeon is going to fix him up tomorrow. i’ll let you know what’s going on in the afternoon

This was in the mens cat 4 race. i was told it was about 20 miles in. i know someone else in the crash broke a collarbone. sounded pretty unavoidable. someone in front bumped someone else, they were both swerving. the one guy’s fork broke and he went flying to the right, so my brother was already moving to the left. and out of no where, the guy’s bike came flying straight at him.

brackenridge does (now) have oral surgeons, so they’re going to fix him up tomorrow. they have to fix the jaw (3 fractures and a dislocation) and get it healed before they can even mess with the teeth… the hospital in witchita falls stitched him up on his chin and lip. luckily, the rest of him seems ok except for some really minor road rash.

no word on the bike. someone is bringing it back tomorrow. it’s really ti, and i’m sure whatever is messed up Jack and Adam’s can fix easily.

he was really lucky to have some very nice, very level-headed teammates and friends around to help get him back to Austin and to get in touch with me.

PS - he’s getting a Road ID ‘get well’ present from me, though!
