I am relatively new to the Austin area (Georgetown) and I am looking to set up my season calendar. I will be doing base work from now until the end of March, and want my races to be between April and October. I want to focus on sprints and olys with sprints being my known strength- I might also consider a late season 1/2IM. Any opinions on the best races without having to travel to far? Any info on the 2006 calendar?
Also, I am interested in a training partner(s)- real or “virtual”. I am a FOPer for sprints and MOPer for olys. My short-term goals are to maintain consistency, gain fitness, and get to race weight. My sport limiter is running and my general limiter is endurance. My aspiration for this season is to place top 3 (okay, more realistically top 5) in my age group (30-34) for my as of yet undetermined A race. Please PM me if interested.
I really haven’t look but they are generally around the same time. The Cap Tex race is always on Memorial weekend (Monday). I it a great venue even though it is a bit crowded.
The best regional in print calendar will be in the March issue of Runner Triathlete News. You can pick up copies at Austin Tri-Cyclist or RunTex. http://www.runnertriathletenews.com is the website.
The first triathlon of the season is usually in March and there are several duathlons in the February/March timeframe. The best group ride is the Austin Tri Cyclist saturday ride. AUstin Cycling association does several weekend rides thoughout the year. An Austin Triathletes meeting is also a good place to meet folks, but they generally are down south…quite a ways from you unless you work downtown. Also check the Runtex triathlon forum for more posts/information.
Another good race is the San Antonio “splash” tri at sea world (sprint).
I would be interested in training with you. I just started doing this last season, and we share similar goals for next season.
ATX Trihead, do you know if ATC is still doing their Saturday rides in the winter? I just recently found out about that ride, but figured it was on hold until it was warmer out.

I am doing Cap. of Tex Olympic memorial day, and Ironstar in Conroe as well and no, the web sites are not updated for 2006 yet. I checked this weekend.
Cap. TX is Memorial day weekend, and Dilloman out by lake travis was on Sept. 11th, 2005. I want to come to Austin for this sprint as well with my brother and some friends. Buffalo Springs 70.3 isn’t too terrible a drive from Austin and is a very well put on and attended HIM in Lubbock. There are lots of great sprints in the Houston area, 2 1/2 hours away if you want some info on those?
Good luck, you’ll love Austin. I lived there for seven of the most enjoyable years of my life.
that looks good. I did the Iron Star this year and it was awesome. Very nice course. Except the water could have been deeper - it was very shallow in areas.
I’m looking to make the trek to Lubbock for the Buffalo Springs 70.3 for '06
Agreed about Jack’s Generic. It’s a great venue and a lot of fun. They hand you a squirt gun as you head out on the run course that you can use on pretty much anybody. Makes for light-hearted racing.
