I saw a flyer for this fund-raiser this morning at practice. Looks like an interesting challenge…
That big purple line on the chart is the divider for the shipping lanes. Cargo ships and ferries doing 18 knots, sounds like fun.
Any idea how far ??
I might sign up…
Somewhere on the site it says 3.5 miles, but I can’t seem to find the specific page right now.
I’m considering doing it also, but I’m going to ask some friends first to see how eager they are to donate ![]()
click on the link 3.5 miles.
My daughter’s swim coach is doing it. She’s very excited. I’d do it if I could draft off of those cargo ships (safely)!

That’s going to be a tough swim. As I understand it, the Strait of Juan de Fuca funnels water off the bottom of the ocean and feeds it into the Sound. Having spent many summers living on Vashon Island, I have never gotten used to the bone numbing temperatures. A neoprene cap is a must.

Uhhhhhh… OK… never mind… damn that sounds cold. Maybe I will just volunteer.
It will be about 50F. You can go try the water right now. The sound only varies a couple of degrees from winter to summer. I swam in the lake when it was 55 last year and thought that was cold enough for me.
This sounds like a great challenge and a great swim.
But how cheesy is it to sign up, pay your $250, get your “free” wetsuit knowing that you will not come close to collecting the $2500 in donations? I’d be luck to collect another $250.
