At home waxing--to do, or not do?

so I’m thinking about purchasing an at home wax kit–the wax warmer, wax, strips–the whole deal. I’d like to wax my legs and arms so that they are silky smooth and will stay that way throughout race season with continued wax as opposed to shave.

has anyone done this? I’m slightly scared, but to tell you the truth, feel a little invigorated by the anxiousness of it. i’m nervous, but feel like going for it.

anyone have experience with doing it at home?

Hmmmm.

I would imagine there are those on this forum who would willingly lend their assistance.

Seriously though, not having to shave would be a big convenience. how long does it last?

Only amongst other triathletes can I admit to this, but I have waxed at home. But not wanting to quit with just my legs, decided to do my stomach and chest, which have a decent amount of hair on them. The legs were ok, but by the time I was halfway through my torso I was having trouble gathering the courage to yank the strips myself. I ended up quitting before I was done and just shaving the unwaxed part until the rest grew back. I guess if you have someone to yank the strips for you it may be better. I’ll never do it again though.

well, I waxed my legs one summer and didn’t have to shave them for almost 3 months. it was actually kind of odd…

but for most people waxing will last anywhere from 3-8 weeks. my eyebrows need waxed more frequently than my legs for some reason.

I was just thinking that doing it at home would save me alot of money–you could get started with 50 bucks, whereas a full leg wax at a salon will cost me more than that. plus I can possibly pay back my husband with a nice leg wax…it would be fun to torture him…lol (especially since we had a fight this weekend

What about that laser or electrolosys thing?

one time i got my bikini, legs and brows all done on the same day…I was on fire all night.

i imagine i could get a girlfriend to do it for me…but for just the lower leg I think I can do it–but I’m not sure…lol. i can see myself with wax all over me and then chickening out…lol!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

i like it, but am not dripping of it. those treatments cost a fortune!

Have you seen the episode of Friends when Monica and Pheobe order home wax, and then have to rip the strips off each other because of the pain? And then Joey and Chandler come running in because of all the screaming? Doesn’t sound like much fun to me. But I’ve never shaved.

The laser thing is expensive, and painful. 5 treatments, at 100$ an hour, and probably 1 1/2 - 2 hours for both legs per treatment. It doesn’t hurt bad at first, but the longer it goes, the worse it gets. I had some treatments done on my torso, and it sucked. I ended up moving away from the area after 2 treatments, so I can’t vouch for whether it works or not.

I wax at home. I used to do legs and bikini, but because I’m blonde and have thin hair anyways, there was no real benefit to doing my legs (even the salon pros have a hard time doing my legs)… so… I only do the bikini line now. I use the pre-waxed Parisa strips, less mess, easy to use. But for legs, it might be easier to get the full kit and kaboodle. I like being able to wax at home, for very little $$ and at whatever time I want (i.e.: 10pm on a Sunday). But it requires some meanness… if you’re a chicken-sh*t, you probably won’t be happy with the results. You could try and save $ by going to an esthetics school… I did that once, and while it took twice as long, I only paid $20 for full leg & bikini.

My wife has been waxing hers legs for years. At first it took her an hour or more but she has it down to 15 minutes for a quick job and 30 minutes for bikini/legs.

I’d recommend that you have it done professionally if the hair is dense and long. Once it’s done completely, the hair grows back in waves. Begin waxing yourself after getting a good clean start and then you are only taking that every third growth. Much easier to stay caught up if you don’t have to endure the maximal pain.

I can’t believe you do your own bikini…I’m terrified of the thought…lol. the legs, I’m ok with that–so, we’ll see. I could have a friend rip the bikini line I guess–or just buck up and try it on my own.

so, I’ll take everyone’s advise and go shopping and give it a whirl. I’ve always had the philosophy that beautiful isn’t about feeling comfortable

I’ll volunteer for that… where can I sign-up for it? :-p

If you try it and it does not work out, can I bring my skis over?

I had to rewax 3 times this weekend because of changing temps. The snow was wet by the time I got home. Good thing I had my wax kit with me or I would have bin a long day. OOOPss ooooh that kind of waxing.

Sorry

I use hot Carnuba Wax on my buttocks…no problems… ;-0

You know, the first few times it was sooooo painful. Then I realized I liked the pain.

Just kidding.

It gets easier the more you do it. I suggest you try it yourself, most friends will be petrified of causiing you that much pain. And if you’re really unsure about your ability to take the pain, get a big ole bottle of tequila and have a bunch of shots first.

well, I already chickened out and made an appointment to get it done…lol. i’ll let you know if I ever require your assistance though

I really hope you’re not a chick.

Seriously though…A friend of mine did the chest/stomach wax…he also had his tongue, and both nipples pierced. He said that the stomach/chest wax was far FAR worse than the piercings.

Electrolysis is permanent, but each hair may take several treatments. So legs can be a big deal, as opposed to your eyebrows. Laser, if you read it closely, says “permanent hair reduction” not removal.

There is a trick to waxing that helps with the pain. A good aesthetist will slap her hand down on the area she has just ripped off and press, instead of just ripping and letting the pain “ring”. It makes a huge difference.
