Asthma meds

I finally pulled the plug on taking advair and claritan about a month ago. I was experiencing blurred vision and my hair was falling out. I have seen a homeopathic DR and I’m really doing quite well. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stay off of some type of control medicine though when I start training harder this spring. With Advair I don’t have to use my rescue inhaler at all and my asthma is really well controlled, I’m just tired of all of the side affects. Has anyone had better luck with another asthma control drug?

I use Advair 250/50 with no side effects. I only use it on hard workout and race days but I follow it up with Ventolin inhaler. Seems to work best. The Advair or Ventolin alone was not working effectively on hard training and racing days so I started doing the combo. Told my Dr. about it at my last follow up and he was fine with it. Could be that I am a lifetime asthmatic and I am used to the medication but I haven’t experienced any side effects and I’ve tried it all. Some don’t work as well for the intensity that we go through. On gym days or easy workouts, I use a generic like Xyopenex. This is my tough time of year(along with spring) so the allergies run high and the asthma is more active. I raced on Sunday with no breathing issues whatsoever.

Advair 250/50 user here as well. I’ve only used it for a few months, but no side effects yet. That and Zyrtec seem to work really well so far.

I use singulair once a day (10mg) and proventil inhaler, couple puffs before a workout. No problems in the last couple years (Since diagnosis)

Intal and albuterol haven’t done too much for me, the ventolin is good stuff but I tend to think of that as more of a rescue inhaler and not a preventative. My asthma is primarily allergen-induced, so I keep after the Zyrtec and Allegra and that manages most of the symptoms. The Discus (dry, powdery thing, not an aerosol) has also worked really well for me as a during-exercise inhaler, but without the system shock of ventolin.

I use a flow meter on a weekly basis (more when there’s a lot of pollen) because I’ve found that a small dip in the flow meter is prophetic of a much nastier symptom waiting to happen, so I try to pre-treat when I see that dip even a little, because it’s way more manageable at that point.

singulair is a no brainer before you would use advair. I have been using it for almost ten years now and I still remember the first time I took it and could not believe what it felt like to breath normal again. No side effects at all-just a lighter wallet. You can get coupons from their website though.

symbicourt twice daily and advair only once, no side effects and I have been on since June. I never use my rescue inhaler anymore.

Similar here, was on Flovent/Singulair for a loooong time, and it never worked that well for me. Switched to Advair/Singulair daily, and I almost never touch the albuterol anymore. I’ve had asthma since I was 5 or 6, and Advair has been, by far the most effective for preventing symptoms.

I take both Singulair and Advair and don’t have any issue with them.

I've been using Advair since before it had an actual name. Just a testing number. My brother inlaw is a pulmonologist and had me try it. It truely changed my life. I use to live on my nebulizer like one of the nerds from Revenge of the Nerds from Oct-March time. I can not remember what year I tried it, but sometime around 2001-02. I had some head aches early on, but no issue since. I only stay on it from about November to March though. I use the 250/50 as well, and rarely use my emergency inhaler. I still use albuterol 15 mins before anaerobic exercise to ward off evil spirts.

So are some of you using advair on a as needed basis? I was always under the Impression that I needed to stay on it all the time.

First, I would get a good doc and work with him/her.

Most/all meds have some side effects but sometimes they are necessary. The newer asthma meds work well for most people…me included.

Good luck.

You do need to be on it consistantly for it to work. It is not an emergency inhaler at all. I just do not stay on it year round. Just the months I tend to have issues.

Advair. With it, I’m basically ‘cured’. And I have it so bad that it almost killed me 3x during high school (pre advair). No side effects. How do you know it wasn’t the claritan?

I can’t remember when I went on Advair but it has been some time…probably '03? I would not be competing without it. I’m on the lower dose but have at times had to bump up to the 250/50. I have not had to do that since I started taking the Singulair along with it. The Singulair helps not only with asthma but with my allergies as well. I have had to hit my alburterol a few times on days when the air has been cooler but rarely use it otherwise.

I guess I don’t for sure know that it wasn’t the Claritan but when I googled side effects I see more of my issues coming up under Advair than the Claritan. Right now I can’t believe how much clearer my vision is. I was getting to the point where I was also having the following side affects:

Hand Eczema It gets really bad about every month and a half. Skin just peels off of my hands. I have had eczema since I was a kid but it only started acting like this after going on advair. I have had to get several shots of Kenollog in the last couple of years (which is a pretty serious steroid).

Arthritis like aching in my joints. I had attributed it to training hard but it has really gotten better this last month.

Cramping I had thought it was from dehydration but seems like it was exacerbated by the meds

blurred vision already better. I was having a hard time doing much on my Iphone but without getting headaches but now I have no trouble

Hair loss, it was all over the sink but has quit falling out since I’ve gotten off the meds

My asthma isn’t all that bad compared to many. I have never been to the ER (probably should have) but by drinking coffee and than taking benydril I have been able to recover. MY EIA was mostly a problem in HS sports, I was in Wrestling and there were a few times I should have probably gone to the ER (blue skin fighting for air). Since HS my struggle has been primarily with Allergy induced episodes and that is why I was put on Advair in the first place. I have only been working out for about 3 years now and this is the 1st time I’ve actually gotten off of the meds. I tried a couple of times before but my coughing got horrible and I had the constant throat clearing and so far I’m not experiencing either of these symptoms. I’m going to go see my allergist in the next month here but I’m trying to get ideas of what athletes are doing for control their asthma. I ran 10K yesterday at a sub 8 minute pace with only a slight tightness in my chest at completion, but I know if i would have pushed it at all I would probably have had to use my inhaler. I guess I might have to go the route of many of you that use it seasonally during the competitive season.

Sounds very serious. Hopefully you figure out what works for you! I’m not a doc so I don’t want to make any crackpot suggestions. Best of luck.

allergy shots cured me of my need for asthma meds.
