I posted a related q about this on another forum, and now that I’m thinking about it, it’s getting my blood boiling. I honestly don’t understand how such a big difference can exist - can Asics or someone else explain it to me in simple terms?
It might be because of different distributorship in Canada.

I think if you had properly posted this in the Lavender Room then you’d learn it is due to Socialized Medicine.
Try not to get run rage.
Try not to get run rage.
'cause there’s nothing as pathetic as a lanky man in spandex shorts.
Because the Running Room and Forzanis have tried to monopolize running shoe retailing in Canada… that’s part of it anyways.

Or a fat one. Guess I better put down the Cheetos.
The Running Room is a huge rip-off, the difference in price is pretty disgusting. I order my shoes from holabirdsports.com I can get shoes delivered to my door for half the price of going across town and buying shoes from the Running Room.
Cant you just buy them online and have them shipped ? Try www.efootwear.com I have gotten a few pairs of 2140’s off of them and they have the 2150’s cheap.
Sorry the 2140’s are 62.00 and the 2150’s are 100.00. I like the 2140’s though.
Dave, I buy all my Asics when I travel to the US. I go about three times each year, and I pay just over half price for Cumulus or whatever else I buy. It doesn’t make sense. I’ll be in Hawaii again in November and I’ll stock up again.
We get hosed up here for runners.
Although sales taxes here in Canuckistan are ridiculous, that can’t be the only factor. I moved here from the states a few months ago but am holding off on buying running shoes until I take a trip south of the border. Just no reason to pay 40% more here for a pair of Kinvaras. Want to talk blood-boiling mad, start a discussion about provincial liquor monopolies. The crappy service, inflated prices, and general wine selection through the LCBO…ugh. At least the health care won’t bankrupt anyone though.
Because of the metric system?

According to someone I know who works for Forzanis, it is a combination of taxes and volume. Import taxes are pretty huge, and we just don’t have the volume of sales in Canada that is present in the US and would allow cheaper prices.
It also sucks that US retailers are not allowed by certain manufacturers to ship products to Canada.
the only time I buy shoes here in Canada is if they are on sale (close to 50% off), otherwise I make an order from runningwarehouse.com
Running room are crooks.
You guys don’t even know what expensive is!
The 2150 cost 240 CAD here in Sweden at one of the big sport retailers.
Now, that is expensive!
Sending PM

Thanks for the tips on USA shippers; this was what occassioned my question and fueled my rant. At last count, runningwearhouse, holabird and roadrunner now all cite “Manufacturer Restrictions” on shipping Asics to Canada, so the option of online shopping via major US online retailers has effectively fallen away. Efootwear is the only price-competitive seller I’ve found that does not enforce these - yet.
I’m still stuck on why there can be such a big difference.
One of my pet issues as well - i can buy carbopro from Trisports.com and land it here including duties, shipping etc for under 30CAD - same product locally is +CAD 50…
Supply chain in US for this product goes - manufacturer - trisports.com.
In canada it goes manufacturer - canada customs - distributor - retailer
Add that to higher taxes etc and you get the picture.
I dont know the running shoe reasons however would guess something similar exists…
If you live within a reasonable distance from the border simply get your self a postal address south of the border (the company a lot of us use in Blaine that is on the border of Vancouver is Secruity Mail Box Services) - ship to there, drive over and pick them up - even if you declare the duty it’s still on average 25% to 35% cheaper than buying locally - and while you are there get a tank of gass and the difference in price pays the gass for the drive…
It’s called market segmentation. They restrict/certify their distributors who agree to only supply to an agreed geographic location. The number of online retailers shipping ASICS to Australia has progressively decreased over the years, with only one online retailer I’m aware of still shipping to Australia. I suspect once ASICS find this out, that retailer will be removed as an approved retailer.
They do this because they believe they can make a higher profit by selling a lower volume at a higher price, than opening the market to all countries to compete on price. To some extent, it’s also about premium pricing. Although their shoes may be the same as other brands, most of their marketing in Australia has focussed on medical endorsements and race surveys showing them to have highest shoe count, in an attempt to make them more desirable. Some of the differences will be due to taxes etc, but it’s primarily a marketing strategy.
For the same reason that it’s cheaper to get bike stuff mailed from Europe than to buy it here in the States (and I’ve bought everything here in the States but maybe shouldn’t have).
