I typically run in ASICS (DS Sky 2 and Speedstar). I am looking to try out Brooks and I am wondering which shoes translates into Brooks? I really like Addidas Mana’s but I do not like their other shoes. I am also looking for a traditional running shoes - No low toe to heel drop. Ideally the shoes will be under or around 10oz. I am 160lbs and run between 20 - 40 miles per week.
Have run in a few of the shoes you mentioned and transitioned from the Launch to the PureFlow and Green Silence… In fact just ran Hartford (marathon) in the PureFlow’s with no issues. Have also run up to half distance including a race in the Green Silence. Note the GS are going away at some point…
The Brooks swap function has you swap the Launch for the Speedstar and the ST 5 Racer for the DS Sky.
I run in the Ghosts, which are not as lightweight as the Launch or Racers, but are a solid neutral shoe.
You might also want to try the PureConnects or PureFlows if you like a lighter weight shoe. Please note, however, that reviews of the PureConnect seem to say that they run a bit more narrow in the toebox than Brooks ususally do, so I bought PureFlows (even though I prefer a neutral shoe) and have been very happy with my choice. I like the PureFlows for shorter runs up to the half-marathon distance, but prefer the security of the Ghosts for longer runs.
+1 on the Connects… I found them narrower. I started in the Cadence, wanted to try something different, wasn’t sure how I felt about the width on Connect, so I went Flow. It’s gone quite well so far! I think I can get away with the narrow issue, so I think next time I will try the Connect just to see what even lighter feels like. Either way though, the Flow is a easy fit, right down the middle. If you want a little support, go with the Cadence.
I moved from Asics to the Pure Flow. No problems whatsoever. Sometimes get a little pain on the ball of my foot if I step hard on rock or something and that is expected
On this note, for anyone in the Toronto area that are looking at this thread, here’s how to get Brooks REAL cheap…
Go to their factory outlet in Mississauga, look up RMP Athletic Locker. I usually get them for 40% off, so around 80 bucks.
For you Americans who think that’s expensive still, just see how much we have to pay for this stuff…
I switched from Speedstar and DS Trainer to the Ghost and Launch. I preferred the Launch out of the two. I also run in the Connect, which I like. I tried the Flow, but it seemed to…sprongy or something for my taste.
I used the Brooks Ghost for a while, but it’s a softer trainer shoe, more similar to the Asics Cumulus. The Skyspeed is a lot more firm and responsive. Since they stopped selling the DS-Skyspeed in the USA, I’ve been getting them new on eBay from the UK. The DS-Skyspeed 3 is out now over there as well… costs $10 to ship them here.
Just got the Brooks - Pure Cadence switched from using Asics Speedstar and Nimbus) for the past 2 years. That Brooks model has made be a believer. Only done about 50 miles or so, maybe not fully broken in but they are a great warm weather shoe, light (under 10oz) and much venting. My only concern is wear life. We’ll see.
I ran on asics for 10 years and after one run in brooks ghosts, I switched completely over to brooks. I would use the little shoe generator thing on brooks website, but for what it’s worth I ran on the cumulus and liked them but the ghosts are really good for me. I also race in the t7 racer. They’re extremely lightweight, which I like a lot, but I only weigh 135 and I can race pretty long distances in very minimal shoe.
